with a nice night bite walleye

Ice fishing has arrived and with 3 to 5 inches of ice on many area lakes you can be assured that anglers are heading out.

The bite has been fantastic for walleyes, especially during low light periods and after dark. Most of the action is occurring in less than 6 feet of water associated with green weeds or shallow muddy bays.  The best bite has been on large golden shiners or medium sized walleye suckers set about one foot off the bottom on a tip-up.

The bite for northern pike has been very good  and we are seeing a lot of upper 20 to mid 30 inch fish being caught. Most of the action is on tip-ups baited up with large golden shiners set right below the ice in 3 to 5 feet of water.

The panfish have been very active and anglers are really pounding a way at them with nice catches of bluegills, crappies and some decent perch. Most of the fish are being caught on the tiny tungsten jigs tipped with spikes or waxies but a few guys are trying plastics and doing well too.

Deer hunters had a pretty good gun deer season and now the muzzleloader season is under way.  With the recent snow that has fallen the deer are going to start moving and staging closer to known food sources and should be easier to target as the season progresses.

Have a great week,

Phil Schweik
