12-18-13 Price County Fishing Report
What a cold December!!!! The sub zero temps have made some great ice with most fishermen reporting 10 to 16 inches of ice on most area lakes. There is a little snow on the lakes that are hampering travel a little but all in all we have some of the best ice conditions that we have had in many years. Walleye fishing has been moderate, Anglers are still reporting a short bite right at dark and first light with scattered action at other times of the day. Northern action has been good with some nice fish being caught up to the mid 30" range. Larger Shiners or Suckers on a treble and leader under a tip-up is the areas go to set up for Northern Pike. Some anglers are using jig rods and jigging larger Swedish Pimples and Jigging Raps for some exciting pike action. Crappie are hitting well, My son Chayton and I snuck out on the water for a few hours on Sunday and did very well, Combined we caught well over 40 fish and kept a nice meal releasing what we didn't need. Most of the Crappie that we caught were on Custom Jig's Shrimpos. Using electronics and a good sensitive rod like the St Croix Legend series Ice Rods was the key to success as we could keep our lure on the fish as they moved thru the water column and detect the Crappies lite bites. We also had a couple of dead sticks set out with crappie minnows on them but on this day the plastics out fished the live bait hands down.
