Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report
With a lot of focus on the remaining early archery season and upcoming deer gun season, most sportsman have put fishing on the back burner. Right now however can be the best time of the year to catch the largest musky of your life as well as catching plenty of walleyes and some big ones too. The fishing in Central Wisconsin still remains very good with very nice muskies being caught. With the cold water temperatures now in the mid 30's the bite has turned to very slow moving baits like gliders and slowly worked jerkbaits as well as running live suckers on quick set rigs. Most of the action is in 12 to 18 feet of water but we are getting a few fish in even deeper water up to and over 30+ feet deep. The walleye bite has been very good with some nice fish up to and over 10 pounds caught this past week. Most of the action is from working deeper water from 12 to 16 feet but I have seen some of the larger fish coming from water as deep as 28 feet deep. One nice 30+ inch walleye we caught this past week was hold right on the bottom in 23 feet of water. We are catching most of our fish on larger jigs - 1/4 ounce and up when baited with large plastic tails and/or medium sized sucker minnows. The deer hunters have seen quite a bit of activity this past week and a few nice deer have been taken. Most of the activity remains located in transition areas between bedding and feeding locations, and now with the rut in full swing the big bucks are starting to show themselves more frequently. One quick tip is that over the past week most of the activity that we have been seeing has been between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Those mid-day hours at this time of the year can be the best time to bag your buck instead of the traditional early and late archery season when early morning or late afternoon periods are typically the best times.
