1-22-14 Price County Fishing Report

A combination of moon phase and weather conditions made for some slow fishing again this week, Fish are still being caught but the bite is slow and light. Ice conditions are making it pretty tough to get around as well, with all the cold weather there is plenty of ice but there is also a lot of snow piled on it and the weight of the snow is making some of the lakes very slushy. If you do venture out on the ice with a 4x4 make sure you bring a shovel.

I still had an OK week of Crappie fishing, I'm not catching the numbers that I would like to but I'm getting enough to have a meal of fish. Rosie Reds on a Dead Stick were the ticket for me this week, you really have to pay attention because the bites were super light and many times not really moving the rod tip at all. I also had luck with orange colored plastics but these were short light strikes and I was missing more then I was hooking.

Walleye action has slowed as well, I think a lot of it has to do with the amount of snow on the ice making it difficult to get to areas where fishermen normally would be fishing this time of year and also that the walleye fishing is normally slower going into the month of February.

Pike action is still consistent on some of the area  lakes with some fish in the mid 30 inch range being reported. Some of the bigger pike are coming out of areas where there is only 8 to 15 inches of water under the ice and are being caught with large Golden Shiners.

There are 3 major fishing contest in the area for the weekend of the 25th and 26th. Saturday is the Justin Donner Tournament on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage, There is also a contest at Corner Connection on Soo Lake west of Phillips on Saturday. Sunday is the Phillips Winter Fest ice fishing tournament on lake Duroy run by the Phillips Chamber. The prize structure has been changed for this years Winter Fest Tourney and they are paying back 100% of the entry fees. They are also having a cash drawing for anyone that has entered the contest at 5pm.

Attached Picture are 9 Crappie from 10 to 11.5 inches that I kept last week during a slow day of fishing.
