MADISON, Wis. (DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES NEWS RELEASE) -- The Washburn County Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Natural Resources are recommending no vehicle travel on area lakes due to poor ice conditions. In the last week three vehicles have broken through the ice while traveling on Nancy, Pokegama and Gilmore lakes. All occupants of those vehicles got out safely.

Anyone venturing onto the ice this winter is urged to use extra caution.

For those brave enough to fish in this frigid weather, they are finding fish. Heard that Long Lake is producing some nice fish. People are asking about frozen smelt and we have been on a search for it..the smelt run this past spring was pretty  slow. We have Customers buying the frozen Ciscos and Herring and using that wth some luck. We have shiners , northern and walleye sucker minnows, fatheads and crappie minnows. For the jigpole fisherman we have the waxies and spikes. THis next weekend looks a little better so get out there and fish.
