1-14-14 Price County Fishing Report
It was a great weekend to be outdoors with the warm temps, but the fish didn't cooperate quite as well as the weather. Fishermen were still able to catch fish but like most times the high pressure system bite was a tough one. We did have some good reports of Northern Pike action, Look for the pike near the shallow weedy areas that you found them in the summer in around 4 to 6 feet of water. If you are fishing in the weeds set a large golden shiner on a tip-up right above the weeds, out in open water I like to set a few sets about a foot under the ice and then some a little deeper. Remember a Northern Pike is built to feed up, it's eyes are right on the top of it's head so you need to have your bait above or right in front of them for best results. Walleye action was spotty with some anglers reporting some good action while other were slow, I was fishing next to a group of 3 anglers on Sunday and they has some good flag action the last 45 minutes of the day and ended up taking home some nice eater walleye. I was set up next to them in an old river channel targeting Crappie, I was using dead sticks with minnows and caught a few on them, I was also using a glow shrimp and had some good action right at dark and into dark on it catching a mixed bag of Walleye and Crappie on it. The walleye were small but on an Ultra Light St. Croix Legend Ice Rod even the 12" walleyes put up a nice little fight.
