MADISON, Wis. (DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES NEWS RELEASE) -- The Washburn County Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Natural Resources are recommending no vehicle travel on area lakes due to poor ice conditions. In the last week three vehicles have broken through the ice while traveling on Nancy, Pokegama and Gilmore lakes. All occupants of those vehicles got out safely. 1/9/14- Reported by Long Lake Bait and Tackle
A few folks out braving the frigid temps! Fishing has slowed a bit since December with this cold snap. Folks are still catching some nice Walleye, Crappie, Bluegill, Northern & Perch mainly in the mornings before 9 a.m., between 4-8 p.m. and really good fishing 1-3 a.m.!!! They are varying in depths and on the move. Popular baits of choice have been: Suckers both Walleye & Northern, Shiner's medium & large, Crappie minnows & Fatheads. We are going through a lot of Waxies & Spikes as well! As far as ice conditions they are ranging anywhere from 5"-24". The snowmobile trail on the lake is marked, there are both permanent and temporary Ice Houses out there. If you are traveling off the beaten path, do some testing by drilling a few holes before taking a vehicle out.
