Richland County Fishing Report 4-5-2013

By Wayne Morgenthaler

April 1st ice fishing and trout report

In Richland County, ice fishing is just about done on the back waters near Lone Rock.  The best bite is still the last hour before darkness.  The more aggressive fish are just below the ice.  This means to walk softly and not make too much noise.  The majority of the fish are crappies and run around 10 inches. The crappies have been hitting a white glow jig tipped with a wax worm.  The hits are very aggressive and make for a good battle.   I wore waders as the edges are getting tricky and my boots are not high enough.  Most of the backwater roads to these lakes are getting slushy and tough to drive.

Trout fishing was great last week as the run off had not yet begun.  This week is another story as the streams have risen and made the water quite murky.   I like to use Panther Martin’s spinners with 4 pound test if you are into the spin casting.  Most colors work but go with a size 3 or 4 spinner.   A good place to get information for outdoor activities for Richland County is to stop in at the Visitor Center located in Richland Center at the railroad station, which is currently open from 8 to 4, Monday through Friday.  They have some outstanding maps to help you navigate. They can also line you up with local guides.  They are located on Hwy 14 in the middle of town and just look for the railroad car and station.  There is a stop light at the intersection that you will need to turn on.   You can call 608-647-6205 or email chamber@richlandalliance.com.
