Northwest Wisconsin Fishing Report March 11, 2013

By Dave Hraychuck

With the close of gamefish season last week, the time to fish late season panfish has arrived! Excellent ice conditions in northwest Wisconsin continues despite last week’s 10 inches of new snow.

The flags flew and the food grilled on the barbeque the last weekend of the gamefish season on Burnett County waters.

Perch and crappies are being taken in 24-28 feet of water. For perch, minnow heads on swedish pimples, buckshot spoons, and kastmasters are the popular baits.  For crappies, plain #8 hooks, pink and white shrimpos and small cubby jigs tipped with live minnows are the ticket.  The last few weeks, bluegills have been steadily biting on fluorescent green dots, rockers, 2 spots, shrimpos and ratzos tipped with wax worms.

Ann Hraychuck checks over their catch of nice bluegills taken on a Polk County lake. Dave Hraychuck’s dog “Drake” keeps his retrieving skills sharp after duck season by retrieving northerns and walleyes from the ice hole and drops them into the fishing bucket.

The weather outlook is good, the ice is safe, and turkey season is a ways off, so get out and enjoy northwest Wisconsin and get a mess of panfish for a great fish fry!
