Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report 1-17-13

Good ice on many area lakes, along with little snow cover is making for easy travel conditions and allowing anglers to access exceptional fishing opportunities.

Icefishing-crappies Icefishing-crappie Nice crappie icefishing
Terry Woldvogel with a couple of nice crappies. Randy Derbick with a nice crappie. Jim Bearnt with a nice crappie.

The walleye bite has been very good during low light periods and after dark.  Most of the fish are in the 14 to 18 inch range but we are catching a few slot (20 to 28) inch fish as well.  The best bite has been  in shallow water (4 to 8 feet deep) on tip-ups baited with large golden shiners but we are catching quite a few walleyes by working 1/8th and 1/4 ounce Northland Buckshot jigging spoons and jigging Rapalas in the deeper water.

Icefishing-panfish Panfish icefishing
Eric Marone and Adam Rasmussen with a nice days catch of panfish. Jim Bearnt and Randy Derbick with a nice days catch of panfish.

The panfish bite has been very good this past week with nice catches of both crappies and bluegills along with some nice perch. Most of these fish have been caught working deeper flats in 10 to 16 feet of water.  We are running either tip-downs baited up with small crappie sized minnows or by jigging small but heavy tungsten jigs that have been tipped with either a waxie or a spike. This past week though we have been having very good luck by simply tipping our jigs with the Impulse tapeworm in red or orange.

Icefishing bass Icefishing perch
Randy Derbick with a nice bass. Eric Marone with a couple of nice perch.

Northern pike have been on a tear and this past week we caught several nice fish in the mid to upper thirty inch range. Most of these fish are coming in shallow water (4 to 8 feet deep) associated with weed edges or transition areas.  These nomadic predators will roam along edges and transition areas looking for an easy meal, and a properly placed tip-up dangling a large golden shiner will almost always provoke a strike.

Icefishing slab crappies Icefishing bluegills
Jim Bearnt and Randy Derbick with a couple of good slab crappies. Hooksetters Guide Phil Schweik with a couple of dandy bluegills.

Successful turkey applicants are starting to see their "yellow" card arrive in the mail that indicates that they have been selected to receive a permit for the 2013 Spring Turkey Hunt.  Zone and time periods are listed on the card as to what successful applicants have been drawn for .

Have a great week,

Phil Schweik
