1/21/14 Rice Lake Fishing Report
The area lakes are covered in snow. Deep snow to say the least. If you are venturing out off the beaten path, make sure to have a buddy on speed dial with a tow strap. Even full sized trucks are getting stuck with the depth of snow covering ice on the lakes.
It seems like the fish are in the mid winter lull right now. They are able to be caught but most of them you are going to have to work for. Make sure to keep switching up color and baits to figure out what the fish prefer in order for them to bite. I think one thing that gets overlooked is the size of lure and bait that is presented. Color is a key factor in getting more fish, but the size, bigger or smaller can make a difference.
Walleyes are out roaming in deep water and being selective on feeding times and areas. Search deep structure that sticks out into main lake basins. Just a few feet of a depth change can be all it takes to catch a few fish right now. Work the edges of underwater points and humps with a jigging spoon, while deploying a tip up or two just on top of the break to catch the active feeders. Fish will be more sporadic, so be patient and fish an area thoroughly.
Bluegills are starting to move deeper and in some areas are pushing out the crappies. Any area in deeper water with a fish crib, weeds, sunken trees and so on are great areas to key in on right now. Sometimes the fish will prefer sunny days, and others they are more aggressive on cloudy days.
If you are fishing with electronics, watch the graph closely. If a fish comes up fast and goes back down, many times you need to switch the size of bait or the color. If a fish comes up to eat, and then races back to the bottom, it most likely did not like the jigging action you offered. If the fish sit and stare, try a different color or profile bait. Make mental notes and narrow down your search to find out what is working.
Good luck fishing and remember, introduce someone new into the outdoors. They will appreciate it for a lifetime.
