Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament

Day 5 Results — Wednesday, July 24, 2013

A day after strong winds limited participation, anglers were back out in force and quickly made up for lost time with the most big fish in any single day yet this tournament — 63 20-pound and larger chinooks.

Baileys Harbor led the way with an incredible 25 fish between 20 and 25.78 pounds.

Sturgeon Bay was also solid, with 15 “20s” — including a 27-pounder that moved into 10th for Steven Danek — and three 25-pluses.

Kewaunee had 11 fish over 20 pounds, the Island eight — two over 26, and both from the same boat caught by Fred Grossman (26.28) and Richard Rapp (26.73) — and Algoma four, its slowest day by far. Steve Van Hemelryk brought one heavyweight in at Algoma, a 26.26-pounder.

While some spots were hot, the ones that weren’t had anglers who had been catching fish scratching their heads. Most said they were marking plenty of fish, but couldn’t get them to go. Some blamed the full moon period, some another alewife die-off (many floaters past two days) and some believed the fish just were too stuffed with bait.

Winds kicked up out of the south overnight into Thursday. Once the current switches, it’s anyone’s guess where the next hot bite will be.

The total of “20s” stands at 232 with four full days to go, and the top 100 fish are already larger than 22 pounds.

Tickets are still available. Entry fee is $25 for the remainder of the event, or $13 for a daily chance. They’re available at the Kewaunee Marina, Algoma BP, Howie’s Tackle, 57 Depot, Kap’s Marina, Greystone Castle and Lakeshore Lighthouse.
