Ashland Area Fishing Report 5-17-2013

Fishing Guide Roger LaPenter from Anglers All, (715)-682-5754, http://www.anglersallwisconsin.

Reports their crew did not get any smelt again on May 15th. That’s two nights in a row now that they came up empty in their nets. They will continue to try again but it seems to have slowed down now. We are not sure what the weekend holds for smelting but it’s looking pretty dim! More than likely the Smelt Season is over for 2013. There is no question about it… it’s been a difficult smelt season this year. The Rivers and Streams are doing great for fishing right now. The Sioux is great right now and the fish are biting like crazy! Fish Creek is very fishable right now and the Big Lake is ready for boats and anglers. All the area boat landings are open and ready to put your boats in. With warmer temperatures in the forecast fishing is awesome. Small Mouth are biting in both the Inland Lakes and are always a good catch on the Big Lake. Steelheads are biting everywhere and Anglers are using a huge variety of bait. It seems to be Anglers choice on the bait at this time.

“Steelhead run in area streams of Lake Superior”

Fishing Guide Scott Bretting from River Rock Inn and Bait Shop, (715)-682-3232, http://www.riverrockinn.net

Reports Trolling on Lake Superior has been really good. Anglers are landing Coho’s, Browns, Steelheads and a few Lake Trout. The water is starting to warm up and the Small Mouth fishing on the Big Lake is always good. The Northern’s seem to be done spawning and are very active. Anglers are catching fish on a variety of baits including live bait such as suckers, minnows, fatheads, and always the old standby-“crawlers”.

There are a lot of fish biting in the rivers right now! The Inlands have been active with Bass, Walleyes, and Pan Fish. Be aware of the postings at the landings on the limits, this varies lake-to-lake. Either check with the DNR website at http://dnr.wi.gov/ or make sure and look for the postings.

The Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce reports:

Call the local bait shops for any fishing news! (Anglers All, 715-682-5754 or River Rock, 715-682-3232).
The Steelheads have been super active swimming up-stream to spawn at Big Rock on County Hwy C over by Washburn, WI. They swim up-stream then spawn and then swim down-stream. Check out the pictures taken on May 14th. It’s an awesome site that lasts about a week. Steelheads are biting like crazy on the Big Lake and on the Inland Lakes.

Look for the upcoming free fishing weekend in Wisconsin on June 1st and 2nd.  Fish anywhere in Wisconsin for free without a license or trout stamp on Free Fishing Weekend. This includes all inland waters and Wisconsin’s side of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River. Other fishing rules apply, such as limits on the number and size of fish you can keep and any seasons when you must release certain fish species. So, pack up the family or call your friends and head to the water for fishing fun.
