Media briefing set on Lake Michigan stakeholder engagement efforts for salmon and trout management

MADISON, Wis. –The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will hold an online media briefingMonday at 11 a.m. to discuss an upcoming series of stakeholders meetings and other citizen engagement opportunities related to salmon and trout management efforts in Lake Michigan.

DNR will convene the three public meetings in late June to discuss management strategies and opportunities for anglers in light of continued challenges facing salmon populations and the alewives they feed on.

The meetings will focus on a variety of potential management actions to ensure continued diverse angling opportunities for the world-class fishery. DNR will host the media briefing Monday to provide reporters with key information regarding the predator-prey balance in the lake and related topics including interstate cooperative management activities, hatchery production, habitat restoration and the potential to increase focus on species with the greatest chances of thriving given the record low levels of open water forage fish such as alewives and rainbow smelt.

To participate in the briefing, members of the media should follow this link to the MediaSite page:http://dnrmedia.wi.gov/main/Play/a8860e5fb85a49dfa8b34f13e5f719f11d. Brad Eggold, DNR southern Lake Michigan fisheries supervisor and Todd Kalish, DNR fisheries bureau deputy director, will provide an overview of the upcoming stakeholder engagement opportunities and current issues. Reporters will then have an opportunity to submit questions via email to the experts.
