Ashland Area Fishing Report for May 14, 2015

On Wisconsin Outdoors

Nate Baron of Ashland-based Up North Guide Service shows off a smallmouth bass he caught in Chequamegon Bay on a recent Sunday afternoon.  (Photo courtesy of Nate Baron)

~ Fishing guides Roger LaPenter and Luke Kavajecz from Anglers All, 715/682-5754 (http://www.anglersallwisconsin.com), report the following:

This report is about the Ashland side of Chequamegon Bay.  The smallmouth bass are around in all of their usual spots, according to Luke Kavajecz of Anglers All in Ashland.  “We've caught them on just about every different technique,” he said.

Folks are still catching trout and salmon all the way from the head of the bay out to the Apostle Islands.  Carolyn Swartz, co-owner of Anglers All, advised fishing the first breaks for trout and salmon.

Carolyn says those targeting trout and salmon should start in Washburn and work their way north along the shoreline, trolling with flatlines.

“And now we have some mud lines out there from the recent rains as well,” she added.  “It’s always a good idea to try to fish the mud lines, if they’re visible.”

The walleye bite has been decent, Carolyn said, with most people trolling with crawler harnesses in the shallows and trolling using stickbaits in the deeper water in the drop-offs into the channel.  This type of fishing is most productive during lowlight hours, she noted.

She said that people have been trolling and casting for some walleye in the Fish Creek and Kakagon sloughs during the low-light hours using shallow-running stickbaits.

Stream fishing is still pretty good.  The Brule River and other South Shore tributaries like the Sioux and Onion contain plenty of fish and the recent rains have brought fresh fish into the rivers.  Water clarity and visibility depend on the amount of rainfall.

For the most complete and up-to-date fishing report, just give them a call at Anglers All and they will gladly keep you informed!
