Ashland Area Fishing Report for March 11, 2015

~ Fishing Guide Roger LaPenter and Carolyn Swartz from Anglers All715/682-5754 (http://www.anglersallwisconsin.com), report the following:

This report is about the Ashland side of Chequamegon Bay. The ice fishing is still good, but with temperatures in the 40s and 50s, it won’t last too much longer. This might be the last weekend coming up of the ice fishing season.

Travel conditions on the bay and to points north have been excellent, but the warmer weather forecast for the next week or so will definitely bring some changes. Access points need to be checked carefully as the ice is moving around now.

“People need to be aware of changing conditions out on the ice,” advised Carolyn Swartz, co-owner of Anglers All. “For example, they should watch for standing water and pressure cracks.”

Pressure cracks can pop up while people are out fishing the deep water, Carolyn explained. “Anglers should be sure to take flotation devices along with them,” she said.

The large pressure crack that developed out at Second Landing has been an ongoing issue. Anglers should be extremely wary before venturing out from there or using it as a vehicle access point. ATVs are probably the best option now for travel to and from Second Landing.

As always, conditions can change rapidly on Lake Superior.  For your own safety and especially if you are unfamiliar with the area you will be fishing, hire a local guide or check with a bait shop prior to venturing out on any ice.

Things in the bay proper are pretty much the same as they have been with a mixed catch of perch, smelt, walleyes and the occasional brown trout. Anglers have been picking up salmon and whitefish out towards the lighthouse, Coho salmon in front of the coal dock, and walleye near Second Landing.

“People should expect the fishing action to pick up pretty quick as the temperatures warm and fish start moving toward the shallows,” Carolyn added.

For the most complete and up-to-date fishing report, just give them a call at Anglers All and they will gladly keep you informed!
