ON THE REDDS…STEELHEAD FISHING HEATING UP

Trout and fly fishing expert Jerry Kiesow is keeping his finger on the pulse of the steelhead runs and checked out some of the smaller creeks in Sheboygan County late last week with a friend.

“Water conditions were perfect,” he said.  “First quarter to a third of a mile we saw nothing.  Then came across a gentleman who was seeing fish but could not catch any.”

Showed some fish on the redds, Kiesow was asked for a “how-to” field lesson.  Jerry obliged, he said,  “but without my friend and his big landing net, I do not think I could have landed them.”

The male, he said, was sight-fished and the female caught blind drifting. The “buck”, Kiesow said, measured 27 inches, while the “hen” came in at 28.5 inches before both fish were released. He estimated the weights at between seven and nine pounds.

“My friend also lost one and had a few other strikes,” he said.  “We were using egg flies. “The Sheboygan and Milwaukee were still running high and fast but without rain should be good to go the week of March 19, Kiesow said.

Check out Kiesow’s website at www.jerrykiesowoc.com. He will be conducting a “Tying For Steelhead” Class at Riveredge Nature Center in Newburg.
