The Wisconsin Trout Waters and Wisdom of Gordon MacQuarrie
(A photography and fly-tying presentation by OWO contributors John Luthens and Jerry Kiesow)
Gordon MacQuarrie cast his final, Wisconsin line over 60 years ago, but the words he left behind continue to capture the hearts of sportsman outdoor enthusiasts, and they continue to be relevant for trout fishermen everywhere.
Born in Superior, Wisconsin, MacQuarrie came of age as a writer and trout fisherman on the rivers of Northwestern Wisconsin, eventually rising to prominence as the first full-time, professional outdoor writer in America, holding the position of outdoor editor for the Milwaukee Journal for 20 years, and weaving his magic, Wisconsin-based tales of “The Old Duck Hunters” onto the glossy pages of every sporting magazine in America.
Outdoor journalist, John Luthens, who was also born in Superior, grew up fishing the northern trout streams, casting a line and capturing photographs along the some of the same, Wisconsin trout reaches that have been mapped out between the pages of Gordon MacQuarrie’s timeless classics. Saturday, February 24, in Winneconne, along with outdoor writer, fly-fishing instructor and fly-tier, Jerry Kiesow, Luthens will be sharing the wisdom, words and trout waters of one of the most entertaining trout pioneers in Wisconsin’s history.
