A Big Win for Gun Rights
Dear Patriot,
Thanks to the effort of thousands of our Nevada supporters, we won a major battle yesterday to keep the rights of law abiding citizens to own guns. This war is far from over and we need to be prepared to fight in every Statehouse in America to keep the gun grabbers away from our Second Amendment rights. Your contributions will allow us to keep up the fight. Please contribute here if you can.
In a bold move that is sure to enrage the gun-grabbing leftists of the Silver State, Governor Brian Sandoval, the governor of Nevada, vetoed Senate Bill 221 that called for universal background checks that would have placed an unnecessary burden on private citizens conducting private gun sales.
The veto sent shock waves throughout the left as it was expected that Nevada would become the latest state to crack down on individual liberties by imposing draconian gun control restrictions.
Liberty was affirmed in Nevada on Thursday and, as an added bonus, the anti-gun fanatics at Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) were offered a crystal clear message. MAIG had spent millions of dollars in ad campaigns to pressure Nevada lawmakers to pass the bill and the defeat is all the better for having been dealt at the final moment by a governor that understands the value of Second Amendment protections.
Predictably, the left has gone into fits of hysteria, swearing vengeance against the governor who dared to defy the anti-gun advocates. Parroting the “90%” myth so heavily promoted by the Obama camp, U.S. Senator from Nevada Harry Reid stated,
“I am deeply disappointed in Gov. Sandoval’s decision to veto this bill. People convicted of a felony or suffering from a severe mental illness should be prevented from buying a gun with a simple background check. Ninety percent of Nevadans agree and it is too bad this bill has been vetoed.”
Husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and ardent gun-grabbing hypocrite Mark Kelly swore political revenge on Sandoval in the wake of the veto. Echoing the sentiments of countless Scooby Doo villains as their plans were thwarted, Kelly claimed that Sandoval would pay a price and stated, “Nevadans won’t forget and neither will we.”
The fact is that the executive serves as a check on the legislative for just such an occasion. In instances, for example, where hysteria prompts elected officials to bend to big-money pressures, the executive may veto that which is unconstitutional. If the legislature can override his veto, then fine- it then becomes a matter for the courts to decide on its constitutionality. But nobody likes a sore loser and MAIG and other anti-gun rights advocates might just have to accept the fact that those who support the Second Amendment won an important victory on Thursday.
The war is far from over; it is, however, nice to see victory for the cause of liberty. Help us keep fighting for your rights with a contribution.
