When you make the choice to carry a firearm for personal protection, it’s crucial that you be as familiar with that handgun as possible. You don’t want to be in a life or death situation and fumble as you engage the threat, so you need to put in the necessary range time to become proficient. Not adequate, but proficient.
Federal Ammunition just made this easier by offering combo packs in five of the most popular self-defense calibers today; .380, 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, .45 ACP and .45 Colt/.410. Each pack offers practice and self defense rounds in one pack. The .380, 9, .40, & .45 each have 100 rounds of American Eagle for practice, and 20 rounds of Federal Premium Hydra-shok Jacketed Hollow Points to use as your carry ammo. The other pack offers 50 rounds of .45 Colt and 20 of .410. Federal also matches the grain weights of the the practice and carry rounds, so you get a consistent feel for the recoil.
I like that Federal put these packs together, it makes it simple to grab a pack off the shelf and head to the range. And both choices in ammo are good ones -- I’ve been using American Eagle for plinking and practice since I first started shooting, and I’ve always found it to be reliable to shoot with consistent groups. I’ve never had a “bad lot” from them, as I have some of the other value ammunition on the market, specifically some of the overseas stuff. As for the Federal Premium, the Hydro-shok has proven time and again in testing that it’s a good, tough bullet, with consistent expansion. I’ve shot a lot of it at the range, and it’s accurate, too.
My only recommendation, is that when you buy the combo pack, also buy another box or two of the carry ammo -- it’s important to practice specifically with your carry ammo, to ensure reliable feeding with your particular handgun.
MSRP: .380: $80.99, 9mm: $59.99, .40 S&W: $79.99, .45 ACP: $88.99, .45 Colt/.410: $66.99
Good shooting!
