Notes From the Field: April/May/June 2022

The spring and early summer were exciting times at WWIA as our Heroes took part in twelve exceptional events across North America from April through June. The diversity of locations and events that we provide for our Heroes is a direct result of our amazing Hosts, donors, and volunteers that work so diligently behind the scenes. Serving our Purple Heart Heroes through events and fundraisers is truly a team effort consisting of hundreds of dedicated and patriotic partners who give of their time, finances, resources, expertise, and most importantly, selfless and generous hearts. Please continue sharing the mission of WWIA to help us reach and educate others about what we do and how they can get involved. Read on for exciting highlights from our recent events and fundraisers. As always, thank you all for standing with us to bring Honor, Connection, and Healing to our combat-wounded Warriors!

5th Annual Great Creek Turkey Hunt

    April 21-24  Alberta, VA

Four of our Heroes recently traveled to Alberta, Virginia to take part in the 5th Annual Great Creek Hunt Club Turkey Hunt. This awesome event always has tremendous community support, and they do an exceptional job of welcoming our Purple Heart Heroes and making them feel like family. Upon arrival, our Heroes were able to get familiar with their accommodations and meet some of the members of the Great Creek Hunt Club, who would guide them on hunts over the next few days. The turkey hunting certainly lived up to expectations, with a great deal of turkey activity, lots of opportunities while in the field, and some beautiful turkeys harvested. In addition to world-class turkey hunting, our Heroes were also able to get in some quality time on the water, fishing for bass, crappie, and catfish. The food, fellowship, and time spent in the great outdoors on this event were second-to-none. Our Heroes were truly grateful for the ability to unplug from the day-to-day and connect with other combat-wounded veterans while building new friendships and memories. Before leaving, each Hero was honored with a knife, turkey call, and hats to commemorate their time in Virginia. We would like to express our genuine thanks and gratitude to Hosts Andy Wilson and the Great Creek Hunt Club for their outstanding attention and care shown toward our Heroes. Special thanks to WWIA Guide Timothy Spence for his contributions and care from start to finish.

"When you have PTSD, it is like having a giant albatross hanging around your neck. The weight you carry becomes a burden not only to you but all the people around you. Think of it like a bottle that starts the day off already half full. It leaves little room to cope with anything by the end of the day. Your family is left with whatever has not already been filled up. Guilt, shame, regret, anger, sadness, and moral injury are just some of the big emotions that fill that bottle and are difficult to unpack every day. PTSD isn’t something that can be seen. It is very real and very destructive, just like someone with high blood pressure can live their life untreated, PTSD can be a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. Unlike a lot of physical wounds, mental health wounds can significantly affect the lives of those around you. Even if you go to a doctor and get treated, the anger, hurt and resentment from damaged relationships often doesn’t get addressed or acknowledged. It was important to me to find some time away from all the stress and noise and pain of everyday life. Time to empty the bottle, to reset. Not everyone can buy a bunch of gear, jump on a plane, drop their life and have somewhere to think, relax and feel. That is where WWIA comes in. By providing this opportunity to relax, reset and to not have to wake up already in a deficit has been invaluable. The woods, the water, the lack of distractions has allowed me to hit the reset button. Time to think and heal. The men up here are amazing. If you need to be left alone, they let you be. You don’t have to explain anything, just clear your head. The guide’s knowledge was second to none. Their kindness and eagerness for you to do well on your hunt is amazing. I enjoyed everything. The accommodations, the people, the rush of taking home a bird and the relaxation of fishing. It can’t be described. I will always remember this experience and can’t describe how much I needed this when I didn’t even know what I needed. Thank you all for everything."

7th Annual DoubleCreek Tennessee Turkey Hunt

  April 22-25  Hohenwald, TN

Five of our Heroes traveled to the Volunteer State for a few days of relaxation, camaraderie, and world-class turkey hunting in beautiful Hohenwald, Tennessee at the 7th Annual DoubleCreek TN Turkey Hunt. After getting settled and receiving a tour from their Host Shelley, our Heroes met with their volunteer guides and enjoyed a delicious home-cooked dinner consisting of london-broil, mashed potatoes, honey carrots and a delicious butterfinger cake while talking and getting to know one another.

The next morning our Heroes rose early to a wonderful pancake breakfast before heading out to their blinds. The first day in the field was met with success as Hero Julian harvested his first-ever turkey, and Hero Bo also harvested a nice bird. After another hearty homemade dinner that included pulled barbeque chicken and pasta salad, everyone relaxed around the fire pit sharing stories and laughter before turning in for the night.

Everyone arose the next morning to the smell of fresh-brewed coffee, egg muffins, biscuits and gravy, and cinnamon donut muffins. After their filling of another delicious breakfast, it was back to their assigned blinds for another exciting day of hunting. Although no toms were taken on the second day, everyone still had a great time as they dined on turkey pot-pie, salad, and dinner rolls while raving about the incredible time they were having at DoubleCreek Lodge. Our Heroes left Tennessee with new friendships, coolers full of turkey meat, and lifelong memories. Gratitude and thanks to the local event guides, Dan Thomas, Jared Hinson, Manny Moreton, Garret Couch, and Toby Adkins, who shared their skills and knowledge with our Heroes. Additional recognition and thanks to Rob and Amy Reynolds, to the Highland Corporation, to Game Wardens Clint Newton and Jonas Cothran, Betty Hinson, Sharon Cox, the Hilliard family, Liza Reynolds, Muletown Cookies, Travis Hinson, Chris Holt, Billy Reece, and to all the generous donors and supporters without whom this event would not be possible. High praise and appreciation to Hosts Dennis Reynolds and Shelley Cohen for their tremendous hospitality and care of our Heroes throughout the years. Special thanks to WWIA Guide Matt Brannon for his outstanding support throughout this four-day event.

"My time here with my fellow brothers and the camaraderie we shared is unmeasurable. Dennis and Shelley are the friendliest, most welcoming people you could meet. They go above and beyond on hospitality. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and experienced hunters. When you are here, you are family. A very enjoyable and comforting time."

6th Annual Galveston Couples Fishing and Culinary Event

   April 22-25  Galveston, TX

The 6th Annual Galveston Couples Fishing and Culinary Event welcomed three of our Heroes and their wives to Texas to experience the best of Galveston Bay fishing in addition to the art of preparing game food. The first evening of the event, our couples were treated to an outstanding boil that included shrimp, potatoes, and spicy sausage. Everyone enjoyed getting to know one another and talking about the fishing that would soon follow. The next morning, after a quick continental breakfast, everyone gathered at the marina and enjoyed a successful day on the water with plenty of catches, conversations and laughs. That evening, everyone feasted on fresh ceviche, a Texas brisket with jalapeno mac and cheese, fresh baked bread, roasted potatoes salad and farmers market veggies.
Another highlight of this event is the culinary portion. Our couples were taught various skills on how to clean, prepare, and cook food that they harvested or caught. Everyone loved the personal instruction they were given as they were able to take these techniques home with them to increase their enjoyment and effectiveness of cooking. That afternoon, couples were able to have some free time to stroll the beach, relax, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Dinner preparations presented another wonderful opportunity for our couples to build on their culinary skills as they enjoyed venison kabobs roasted in the pizza oven, wild boar and pizzas made with local wild mushrooms. They also cooked seasoned filets from the speckled trout and redfish they caught during the day in the pizza oven. It was an outstanding final evening as everyone spent time reminiscing about their experiences in Texas over the past few days.
This event truly combines the best of outdoor adventure and indoor dining, as everyone enjoyed their time fishing as well as learning how to take items from harvest to table. This was an exceptional getaway that elicited new friendships, new skills, and memories that will last for years to come. Our highest gratitude and thanks to Hosts Brad and Julie Boisen for their exceptional care and hospitality toward these couples, and for putting on world-class events year after year. Additional recognition and thanks to WWIA Guide Jake Whipkey for his assistance and support throughout this four-day excursion.

"My husband Thomas and I had a wonderful opportunity to do a couple’s event with WWIA in Galveston, TX at the home of Brad and Julie. For me, it was the first chance I had to experience a trip with Thomas since his injuries. For me, it was incredible to see him open up to fellow brothers in arms and talk about what happened. To listen to each of the families experience of deployment and the aftereffects of war that both service members and spouses endure touched my heart. Brad and Julie are both exceptional Hosts that truly have servant’s hearts. They went out of their way to ensure that each person was taken care of or didn’t need anything. They are passionate about giving back to military service embers and their families. Jake is passionate, funny, and self-giving of his time. He made everyone feel just as welcome as Brad and Julie did. I highly recommend any trip that involves WWIA, Jake, Brad, and Julie. It was well worth the time and a great experience. There are memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. Thank you to everyone that was involved in making this event happen."

9th Annual Kansas Cast & Blast

April 27 - May 2   Cawker City, KS

The 9th Annual Kansas Cast & Blast proudly hosted four of our Heroes in scenic Cawker City as they enjoyed five days full of fellowship, hunting, fishing, and some well-deserved time away. As everyone arrived and settled in the first evening, our Heroes scouted and familiarized themselves with the hunting grounds and developed a plan for the upcoming hunt. They were also able to get in a quick hunt, and Hero, Stacey was able to harvest a nice 2-year old bird for a great start to the event. Everyone headed back and enjoyed a nice dinner while getting acquainted.

The next morning everyone made their way to their selected hunting locations and Hero, Jared was able to harvest an impressive Tom. You never know what awaits you on a hunt, and later in the morning, while driving and scouting out locations from their truck, the Heroes witnessed a rare sight. A turkey was running across a field and they witnessed a bobcat attack the turkey near the top of the hill they were approaching. As they drove up, the bobcat ran off, leaving the turkey behind to be harvested. Definitely a sight few people have ever seen in the wild, and thanks to the bobcat, a nice turkey was gifted to our Heroes. In the afternoon, some of the guys went fishing and some who had yet to tag out went back to the field in search of a turkey. That evening, our Heroes had a delicious meal of Rocky Mountain oysters, frog legs, as well as the fish they had caught earlier, then enjoyed reminiscing about the day's events.

The next morning Hero, Steve joined Host, Carl in the field, and although they had a good opportunity, they were unable to harvest the wily bird. That afternoon, everyone got in some fishing, and everyone enjoyed catching a multitude of crappie before heading back for another fantastic meal accompanied by a plethora of stories and laughs between everyone. Day four had Hero, Steve accompanying Carl once again, and this time they were locked in as Steve harvested a nice turkey. With this bird, all Heroes had successfully tagged out and it put an exclamation point on what had already been a phenomenal event. On the final evening of the event, our Heroes had a delectable prime rib dinner and expressed their appreciation and gratitude to the guides, volunteers and the Hosts. Our Heroes truly relished their time in Kansas, and raved about the combination of this cast and blast event. As great as the hunting and fishing were, the conversations and camaraderie between our Heroes were certainly the highlight as there were new friendships and memories made. The food, hospitality, and community involvement were equally amazing, and our Heroes could not have been more grateful for the kindness they were shown throughout their stay. Our sincere appreciation to Host Carl Suter and friends for taking such tremendous care of our Heroes and for continuing to raise the bar year after year. Additional thanks to all the guides, volunteers, and supporters that helped make this event possible. High praise and gratitude to WWIA Guide Matt Brannon for his tremendous expertise and attention throughout this event.

"This hunt has by far been one of the most relaxing, enjoyable trips I have been on! This hunt was exactly what I needed to help me reset, recharge, and reconnect with like minded people and gave me the opportunity to meet some of my amazing brothers in arms. The Hosts, Carl, Ted, Herman, Matt, and everyone that helped bring all of this together are some of the most amazing people I have had the pleasure of meeting. Everyone made me feel right at home, comfortable. This group of patriots have put together one amazing event. It was low key, very personal, and all about hunting and I could never thank them enough. I didn’t realize how much I needed some time to myself and the camaraderie of other service members as well as just enjoying the simplicity of hunting and fishing. I can’t even express how generous and kind everyone that I encountered was to all of us. Everyone went above and beyond to help get us our turkeys and fish. I feel like I have made some lifelong friends. So, a huge thank you to the WWIA for this once in a lifetime experience."

12th Annual Wisconsin Cast & Blast

April 29 - May 2   Rothschild, WI

Four of our Heroes made the trek to Rothschild, WI to partake in four incredible days at the 12th Annual Wisconsin Cast & Blast. To say our Heroes enjoyed their turkey hunting would be an understatement, as the weather was perfect and the turkey activity beyond expectation. After everyone arrived and got unpacked, they had a welcoming dinner at the Log Cabin Restaurant to get acquainted and talk about the upcoming schedule for the days ahead. The next day, everyone arose early, excited for the upcoming hunt. Their expectations were certainly met, with multiple birds being harvested on the first morning. Unfortunately, the clouds and heavy rains moved in after lunch, so some of the Heroes went to a local gun show, which was a nice alternative to the inclement weather. Great conversation and shared stories were enjoyed over another delicious dinner as everyone wound down for the evening in anticipation of another awesome day.

The following morning our Heroes traveled to the Wisconsin River and despite some rain showers, everyone had a blast fishing and catching some of the ever-challenging and elusive walleye. Another highlight of the event was visiting Tony Kopchinski, who proudly hosts the annual Wisconsin Woodturning Event. While visiting Tony's workshop, the Heroes were able to learn about the art of woodturning and were able to try their hand at this amazing skillset. They were able to make some beautiful rolling pins, plates, and slate turkey calls. It was an incredible experience that our Warriors raved about. This event provided our Heroes the opportunity to get to know one another and form new friendships in a relaxing environment. Time spent in the great outdoors, exceptional hunting, along with the delicious food, camaraderie, and beautiful surroundings truly made this excursion a treasured memory for our Heroes. Heading home with coolers full of turkey meat and some hand-crafted woodturning items didn't hurt either! Our sincere thanks to all the wonderful donors, volunteers, and supporters who went above and beyond to make this event so successful and enjoyable. We would like to convey our highest thanks to Hosts Todd and Dawn Bohm for their generosity, care, and for conducting another top-tier event. Additional thanks to Tony Kopchinski, for sharing his knowledge and skill with our Heroes. Appreciation and praise to WWIA Guide Jon French for his exemplary support and coordination throughout the event.

"What a great event. The people, the food, the camaraderie was so amazing. Last year 2021, was very hard for me. I lost everything after my identity was stolen and I’ve been rebuilding my life. I also guide hunts for veterans. This event allowed me to meet new lifelong friends and to relax in a fun, safe environment where I could enjoy the outdoors. Truly, thank you so much. The Wisconsin group of people are absolutely the best people you will ever have the privilege of knowing and I feel blessed to be able to call them friends. Woodturning is the best hobby in the world, seriously! Thank you for helping me and making my experience the absolute best it could be. I truly love this group of people."

7th Annual Western Pennsylvania Turkey Hunt

May 12-15   Rural Valley, PA

Another exceptional time was had at the 7th Annual Western PA Turkey and Fishing Event in scenic Rural Valley. Four of our Heroes gathered to enjoy world-class hunting and fishing with their fellow Purple Heart brothers in the rolling hills of Western Pennsylvania. Upon arrival at the hunting lodge, the bonds formed between these Heroes was impressive and immediate, as everyone had a great time getting to know one another while enjoying an incredible dinner. The Heroes also were appreciative to meet and get acquainted with their local hunting guides before they would set out for their first hunt in the morning.  Everyone rose early the next day and were introduced to a hunter's paradise, as they were privileged to hunt at two beautiful and expansive properties; a combined 400 acres of hunting grounds that were plentiful with deer, turkey, and a well-stocked bass fishing pond. There was plenty of turkey activity early on and a beautiful tom was harvested. After lunch our Heroes were treated to some private trout fishing courtesy of Inga Armstrong of Blackleggs Trout Nursery, a private hatchery that was freshly stocked full of brook, brown, rainbow, and golden trout. Our Heroes thoroughly enjoyed their time on the water, catching a ton of fish throughout the afternoon. That evening everyone had great conversation over another delicious meal as they shared stories and discussed the details of their exciting day.

The following morning, everyone returned to the field for another early morning turkey hunt. Although there was plenty of activity and a few opportunities, no birds were taken. After another delicious lunch, everyone headed out for an afternoon of fishing on the pond followed by a locally catered dinner where they expressed their gratitude to the Hosts and guides and reminisced about the memories made during this event. As great as the hunting and fishing was, the friendships and camaraderie during this trip was exactly what these Heroes needed to help them regroup and reconnect. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Hosts Dan and Susan Bevevino for putting on another world-class event for our Heroes. Additional gratitude goes out to local Guides Frank Bevevino, Frank Condino, Todd Raible, Steve Thacker, Tony Brunetta, and Scott Crownover for their knowledge and expertise. Special thanks to Frank Condino for his continued dedication and assistance, and for presenting a beautiful custom-made knife to each Hero that his cousin fabricated especially for them. High praise and appreciation to Indiana Country Club for providing a great dinner during this event. We also want to recognize and thank WWIA Guide Jake Whipkey for his attentiveness and care throughout these four days.

"I would like to thank WWIA for sponsoring the fishing and turkey hunt in Pennsylvania. I would like to extend my appreciation for the hospitality of Dan Bevevino, Frank Condino and their family and friends that welcomed us with open arms. Besides the experience, I want to thank Dan’s whole family who helped us and appreciated us and treated us like family. I am very appreciative. The event experience was very fun and I found an extended family outside of the military that appreciates us. The event itself was a blast, meeting my fellow wounded veterans that I can connect with and relate with makes everything easier. The fishing was a blast because I learned a lot and it gave me a new experience in life that I will continue doing. I feel relief and a lack of stress. Hunting is something you can relate to your military experience. All the adrenaline, excitement and awareness of everything around you makes it easy to forget my stressful situation. Overall, this was an exciting and fun experience. Once again, thank you WWIA and Dan Bevevino for sponsoring this event for us."

4th Annual Ohio Freemasons Lake Erie Walleye Fishing

May 13-16  Huron, OH

Six of our Warriors converged on Huron, Ohio to enjoy four days of outstanding fishing, camaraderie, and fun at the 4th Annual Ohio Freemasons Lake Erie Walleye Fishing Event. The weather was ideal and the shores of Lake Erie provided a perfect backdrop for our Heroes to unwind, recharge, and enjoy a few days of much-needed downtime. To welcome our Heroes, they were treated to an exceptional dinner by grateful members of the community, courtesy of the Holland-Bond VFW Post 7576. Our Heroes quickly discovered why Lake Erie is one of the premiere walleye locations in the world as there were copious amounts of walleye caught during their time on the water. This would not have been possible without the selfless dedication and expertise of the volunteer fishing guides from this area. This event has exceptional support and our Heroes were humbled by the patriotic and gracious members of the local community, the veteran service organizations, and the Grand Lodge of Ohio. It offered not only world-class fishing, but more importantly, camaraderie and newfound friendships amongst the Heroes. They left Ohio with tremendous gratitude, wonderful memories, and coolers filled with walleye as evidence of an amazing time spent with amazing people.

Our sincere appreciation and thanks to Host Virgil Tent and the Ohio Freemasons for conducting another spectacular event in honor of our combat-wounded veterans. Huge thanks to Thomas Nichols and Jim Clifford for their coordination and stellar assistance, as well as Felicia Tent, Cheryl Nichols and Crisie Clifford. Special recognition and applause to boat Captains Mark and Meme Carr, Mike and Dana Daugherty, and Mathew Leben for sharing their time, skills, and for expertly guiding our Heroes while on the water. Additional gratitude to Patti and staff from the Wild Waves Motel for their hospitality and care, to Tom Dunn, President of the VFW Post 7576 for hosting dinner for our Heroes and for donating use of their hall for the event fundraiser. We salute volunteers Anita Rivers, Cindy Bansek and her sister, and all the volunteers who worked selflessly to help raise over $8,000 in support of our Heroes, and also to the past Grand Master of the Freemasons, MWB Richard A. Dickerscheid, who generously created the Grand Lodge of Ohio Charitable Foundation Fund for Veterans and First Responders from which we graciously received a $4,000.00 donation toward this event. High praise to WWIA Guides Gabe Fierros and Mark Broda for their exceptional coordination and support throughout the entire excursion.

"When we arrived on the fishing event, there was a heartwarming welcome and dinner. Over the next two days I learned a lot about walleye fishing from the fishing captain’s and Hosts. I had a great time with my fellow brothers, and I really felt better in my life."

Inaugural New York FLX Turkey Hunt

May 13-16   Truxton, NY

WWIA was excited to welcome another incredible opportunity for our Heroes with a brand new event in May. Two of our Heroes were warmly welcomed to Truxton, NY to enjoy premiere turkey hunting over four days at the Inaugural New York FLX Turkey hunt, hosted by Trent McCall in conjunction with the WWIA NY FLX chapter. Upon arrival, a safety briefing was given, and everyone was able to familiarize themselves with their weapons and get "sight in" time on the range in preparation for the upcoming hunt. There was also time the first evening to do some fishing and for our Heroes and Hosts to get acquainted. Everyone hit the woods the next morning in search of turkeys, and although there was activity in the area, none were harvested. After a delicious lunch and a brief rest, a great time was had fly fishing in the afternoon. Great conversations and laughs were had around the dinner table while enjoying a wonderful home-cooked meal, courtesy of the McCall's. After dinner, the accessible property was scouted for birds, and everyone discussed the specifics for the next morning's hunt. The remainder of the evening was spent relaxing and getting a good night's sleep.

Everyone hit the woods before sunrise and it was mission success as a beautiful turkey was harvested, tagged, and returned to camp for processing. The afternoon consisted of more fishing and camaraderie as everyone relaxed around the pond. That evening's dinner was special, as select members from the local community came to the cabin to meet and honor our Heroes while enjoying an amazing steak and seafood dinner especially prepared by the Hosts. Everyone enjoyed themselves and our Heroes spoke fondly about the wonderful time spent in the Finger Lakes over the past few days and the new friendships they made.

On the final morning of the event, there was time to get in one last quick hunt before heading back to the cabin to gear up and head out to airport. Everyone exchanged goodbyes and expressed their appreciation as they made their way home. This inaugural event was simply incredible, and the bonds formed and memories made will last a lifetime. None of this would have been possible without the generosity and hard work from Hosts Keith Tidball and Trent McCall, the Kuneytown Sportsmen's Club, as well as the thoughtful support of the local community members. Special thanks to Ed and Laurie Poole, Poole's Drive-InFour Leaf Custom Calls, Lloyd and Martha McCall, J.P. Ross Flyrods & Co. Outdoors, and Canoga Creek Outfitters. Additional appreciation and thanks to WWIA Guide Asa Barrett for his attention and care on this event.

"I want to express my gratitude towards the hosts, guides, and the community for showing support and love for us during and after this event. From the time I made it, to the time I left, I felt the love and connection from everyone. This event will always be in my memories and in my heart. Thank you for everything that you gave and poured into this event. Everyone had huge hearts and were so welcoming. It’s an honor to have spent time with all of you. I made so many new connections and friends that I will cherish forever."

2nd Annual New York/Pennsylvania Trout Fishing & Bass on a Fly Event

May 20-23   Bradford, NY

The 2nd Annual New York/Pennsylvania Bass Fishing and Trout on a Fly Event was honored to welcome four of our Heroes to Bradford, NY to enjoy four days of camaraderie and fishing in the great outdoors with their fellow combat-wounded veterans. Once everyone arrived and settled in at Rupp cottage, they went to Lamoka Lake to fish for a few hours while getting acquainted. Then everyone returned to the cottage and had a nice dinner while sharing stories and talking about the upcoming activities over the next few days.

The following morning, everyone rose early and took a short drive over to Pennsylvania to get in some world-class fly fishing. They spent the morning catching a variety of brook, brown, and rainbow trout, and everyone had an amazing time. Following a hearty lunch, they received some outstanding instruction from a member of the local Chemung County Federation of Sportsmen. They all fished for a few more hours before heading back for a well-deserved dinner consisting of some of the trout caught earlier that day. WWIA Guide Derek taught the Heroes how to clean, prepare and cook their catches. Lots of laughs, great conversation, and camaraderie were had throughout the remainder of the evening.

Another early start had our Heroes eating a good breakfast at the cottage before heading out to Keuka Lake where they were met by several local Crystal City Bassmaster chapter members who graciously accompanied and shared their knowledge and skills with the Heroes while on the water. It was another exceptional day of catch and release fishing, and at the end of the day, each Hero was generously gifted with fishing lures from the Bassmasters. It was the exclamation point to a memorable and fun-filled day of catching fish, increasing their skills, and making new friends along the way.

As everyone prepared to head home the following morning, our combat-wounded veterans raved about their time spent here and could not have been more thankful for the outpouring of support and gratitude from the local community. This event was first-class from start to finish, and our Heroes left with a deep appreciation of their time in New York and Pennsylvania, having met incredible people, forming bonds of friendship with their fellow Heroes and those who graciously served them at the event, and experiencing new adventures in a beautiful place. High praise and sincere appreciation to Host Rocky Criss for his coordination and care, and to everyone who went above and beyond to help support and make this mission so special. Additional recognition and thanks to Elmira White Eagles Club for generously donating steaks for our Heroes. Special recognition and gratitude to Catherine Creek Trout Unlimited Chapter for sponsoring this event, and to WWIA Guide Derek VanBuren for his tremendous support and all-around efforts.

"For me, life has been defined by moments, fractions of time with no finite limits. From the moment that I was injured, those pieces of time have been dark. I have been resistant to take part in things like this trip. I cannot say if the resistance was fed by the thoughts of the past or the fear of the future. What I can state for sure is that I’ve had several life altering moments here on this trip. The WWIA and the volunteers that I’ve encountered on this trip have given me hope and a renewed sense of purpose. The fishing (which I must say was amazing) was such a minor part of the moments here. The sport was the catalyst, a common denominator and functional property of change. I’m forever grateful for these moments."

5th Annual MO-KAN Catfishing

May 27-30   St. Joseph, MO

What better way to kick off the summer than by heading to Napier, Missouri for some world-class catfishing! Team MO-KAN proudly welcomed three of our Heroes to the 5th Annual MO-KAN Catfishing event for four days of well-deserved, top-notch food and fellowship. After everyone arrived, they headed to Bandanas BBQ to grab lunch and get to know one another, then headed to Napier Hunt Club to get settled in. After a quick tour and meeting up with some of the local guides, everyone headed to the Missouri River to get some lines in the water. They utilized several different fishing tactics such as bank lines, jug lines, and rod and reel fishing. They met with success on their first day, with several nice catfish caught. Everyone went back to camp for a delicious BBQ Dinner courtesy of Vanzino's. After dinner, our Heroes gathered around the firepit where they spent time relaxing and talking.

Rising early the next day, they headed out to check the bank lines they had set the previous day. They would not be disappointed, as the catfish were plentiful with over 100 pounds in total, and two catfish weighing over 40 pounds each! There were also some nice blue catfish caught as well, and everyone raved about the different techniques they had learned. Lunch was an enjoyable fish fry, then everyone got a little rest before heading out to catch some bait, hauling in twenty-nine Gar in a single cast net! A short time later, they visited the Bob Brown Wildlife Refuge and enjoyed seeing the various wildlife. After a brief return to camp to resupply, they spent the remainder of the evening on the river and caught another 40-pound blue catfish.

As they checked their lines the next morning, they were amazed at the plethora of catches. The biggest catch of the trip ended up getting caught in some trees and snapped the line. Disappointing, but part of the adventure. Everyone headed back to camp for lunch and then some of the guys drove out to Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. The remainder of the evening consisted of some fishing on Napier Pond and shooting some clay pigeons.

As our Heroes headed home the next morning, everyone reflected on the phenomenal time in Missouri. As incredible as the fishing was, the camaraderie and bonds formed amongst our Heroes was unquestionably the highlight of their time. The community of volunteers, donors, guides, and supporters that make up Team MO-KAN are simply phenomenal, and every year they pull out all the stops to show their gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices our Heroes have made in defense of our freedoms. This top-tier event is a testament to the incredible dedication and support of so many wonderful people and businesses in this community. They work throughout the year to ensure that our Heroes not only have an exciting time, but that they leave this event feeling restored and with the knowledge that they are not alone in their healing journey. Another tremendous event that would be impossible without the unwavering commitment of Team MO-KAN. Thank you for hosting our Heroes, and for your outstanding efforts and contributions year after year. Additional gratitude and appreciation to Terry Supple and Napier Hunt Club for providing food and housing to our Heroes. Recognition and thanks to WWIA Guide Jeremy Smith for his outstanding support and leadership throughout the event.

"I don’t remember a trip like the catfishing trip I was invited to attend. All the Host were fantastic. I have real issues with balance. The Guides and Host did everything possible to get me in and out of the boats without incident. I was very lucky to catch two nice size catfish, one night’s catch was 37 pounds. This adventure was a special trip for me, it made me feel very special. I’m so proud to have served my country. This total crew was icing on the cake for me. I will never forget this event and how it made me feel. Fish fry, lodging, fishing, and listening to everyone talk about hunting and fishing adventures."

9th Annual Alaska Halibut Fishing

May 27 - June 1   Seward, AK

Five of our Purple Heart Heroes traveled to scenic Seward, Alaska for an epic adventure at the 9th Annual AK Halibut Fishing Event. Our Heroes arrived and got situated for their stay at the Kenai Fjords Bed and Breakfast. They were given a safety briefing and familiarization with the boat by Host John Moline. The first morning out on the water was bright and sunny with calm seas. This made for some great catches with 6 nice sized halibut and 28 rock fish as well. While enjoying the tremendous fishing, there was plenty of local wildlife around them as they observed Humpback whales, Dall porpoises, and sea lions. Everyone spent time talking and getting to know one another better over a wonderful dinner before turning in to get another early start the next day.

After a breakfast of fresh blueberry pancakes, it was time to drop some lines in search of grey cod, halibut, and more rock fish. There was a plethora of wildlife sightings again and in addition to the Humpback whales and sea lions, there were killer whales around as well. After landing 2 halibut, 40 grey cod and 28 rockfish, it was time to head back to shore to clean and prepare the fish. Some of the Heroes went into town to see the shops and local offerings of Seward. For that evening's dinner, everyone feasted on blackened Cajun cod while sharing stories about their exciting day.

Our Heroes rose early the next morning, downing some biscuits and gravy before enjoying another day exploring and fishing the local waters. It was a little foggy and the fishing slowed a bit, but they still brought in an impressive haul of 1 halibut and 28 rockfish. After heading back and getting cleaned up, everyone went to the American Legion Post 5, where the Heroes were welcomed and honored with a wonderful dinner while meeting the incredibly patriotic people of Seward.

Fishing over the next two days was exceptional, with limits being hit quickly. Our Heroes were able to observe mountains goats, a black bear, bald eagles circling over the boat and then swooping down boat side to grab some fish. An additional 14 halibut, 61 grey cod, and 7 rock fish were caught over these days, bringing the total weight of fish sent home with our Heroes to roughly 78 pounds each! Incredible!

This trip will stay in the hearts and minds of our Heroes for many years to come as they marveled at scenic vistas, observed native wildlife, learned about local history, and indulged in world-class fishing in the last great wilderness. The weather could not have been more idyllic throughout their stay, and there were plenty of amazing and challenging catches during their time on the water. Our Warriors were honored, thanked, and appreciated everywhere they went by the outstanding local community. The food, sights, fishing, and friendships made during this trip were second-to-none, and our Heroes could not be more grateful for their time spent in Alaska. Our sincere thanks to the American Legion Post 5, the Sons of the American Legion, and the American Legion Auxiliary for their outstanding support. Additional appreciation and gratitude to Kristin Minden and Allen Long from Captain Jack’s Seafood Locker for packaging, freezing and boxing the Heroes' catches to take home. Special thanks to Host John Moline (Current Affair ChartersKenai Fjords Bed and Breakfast), and friends for giving our Heroes a once-in-a-lifetime excursion. Special appreciation and thanks to WWIA Guide Jason Gaudette for his contributions and assistance during this amazing event.

"What can I say that will fully convey the experience? This wasn’t just a fishing trip in a beautiful location. The people and places I have experienced have passed through my exterior to reach my heart and soul. I didn’t even realize it until our last day on the water. We were on our way back to port and I called my family to tell them about the day we had. While I was trying to describe everything, it hit me. I got choked up and could hardly get the words out. To WWIA, thank you so much for providing this adventure. This one will be etched in my memory forever. My only wish is that it could happen more often. I can’t tell you how much it means to be around other wounded warriors; we seem to understand each other in a way that I have never had with others."

9th Annual BC Bear Hunt

June 12-19  Tatlayoko Lake, BC

One of our Heroes, who is also a WWIA Guide, had the unique opportunity to travel to breathtaking Tatlayoko Lake, BC to participate in the 9th Annual BC Black Bear Hunt with Skinner Creek Hunts. This location is full of scenic mountains views and trophy bear hunting that even the most seasoned hunter would appreciate. This trip provided our Hero with the perfect combination of exciting world-class bear hunting in one of the most relaxing and gorgeous environments the great outdoors has to offer. Upon arrival at the lodge, our Hero stated that it felt surreal, as the beauty of the Canadian wilderness was so overwhelming and picturesque, it was like something out of a movie.

Over the next several days, there was a lot of bear activity, as they were able to observe some grizzly and black bears roaming through the wood lines, fields, and near rivers and streams. Some of the bears were deemed too small to harvest by the Host, so they were passed on, but after several days of using different hunting techniques, our Hero was thrilled to have harvested a nice-sized black bear. This was definitely the experience of a lifetime. Our Hero raved about the amazing accommodations, the hospitality and home-cooked meals, and the wonderful conversations and times spent with his Hosts. This incredible opportunity was made possible due to the generosity of Hosts Doug and Julie McMann of Skinner Creek Hunts. Thank you for your outstanding dedication and faithful support of WWIA and our Purple Heart Heroes over the years. Additional thanks to Brenda Gibson for her assistance and expertise throughout the event. We appreciate you all for making this such a special and memorable excursion for our Hero.

"This experience has been hands down a once in a lifetime experience for me. British Columbia is the most beautiful place I have ever seen, it is wild and free. This week here with Doug and Julie was amazing. Doug and Julie were so gracious and hospitable. The food was amazing, and I never knew you could can meat and make it taste so amazing until this week. One of the coolest things we did was pack our lunch each day and build a fire and cook our lunch out in the field all while experiencing the amazing views the mountains had to offer us. This whole week was wild from start to finish. We were within feet from over 5-6 different bear. We had an encounter within 10 yards of a giant grizzly bear that was hair raising to say the least. We put in a lot of miles, and we were tired, but the last day, we got it done. I will never forget this week and the memories we made together. It was PERFECT!!!! Doug and Julie are truly great people, and I am thankful for having met them and will forever be grateful for their friendship."
