High School Trapshooting Returns to Southeast Wisconsin
Now in it's fifth season of competition, the Southeastern Wisconsin Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Conference has grown to nearly 700 athletes from thirteen local High Schools who will compete in a ten-week long season which will culminate at the conference championships on May 31 and June 1 at the Waukesha Gun Club.
The conference is now split into two divisions: North and South to allow teams easier travel to weekly dual-meets. The school-aged athletes are grouped into three classifications; Varsity, Junior Varsity and Intermediate based on their school grade and experience level. Every single athlete participates each week and shoots one round of 25 targets with the top-five scores each week comprising the team overall score.
In the North division, Milwaukee Marquette came out of the winter break in midseason form breaking 122 of 125 targets. Henry Kurtzweil and Alex Borden both posted perfect scores in a 122 to 112 victory over Oconomowoc paced the Hilltoppers. Dalton Dunham paced the Coony dropping just one target.
Jefferson was just one target behind Marquette breaking 121 targets power past Cudahy’s 107. Aaron Walechka and Austin Beilke were both clean for the Eagles. Sierra Popp, Logan Hennlich and Andrea Turlick led the Packers with 22 each.
Kevin Postler and Brian Schroeder who broke 21 apiece pacing Muskego as the Warriors downed the Red Knights 102 to 92. Milwaukee Lutheran who is in their first year of varsity competition was led by Daniel Patterson’s 22.
In south division action, Emily Galuszka was perfect for Wilmot as the Panthers bested Racine Lutheran 119 to 112. Andrew Kittel paced the Crusaders with a 24.
Union Grove and Lake Geneva Badger shot to a 115 tie with Union Grove getting the nod on a reverse run (most total targets broke from the end of the round) 56 to 44. Luke Kastenson paced the Bronco’s while Joe Altwies and Bobby Ebbers led Badger all with 24’s.
Burlington topped Waterford 113 to 103 in a battle of last two years SCTP state champions. Josh Grisham paced the Demons with 24 and Corrie Fullinston and Maddie Berneau with 21 each.
Westosha Central broke 113 targets but fell to the virtual (average of six other South division scores) of 115. Mariano Ruffalo was perfect for the Falcons.
Winners in junior varsity were Westosha Central, Burlington, Wilmot, Lake Geneva Badger, Milwaukee Marquette, Jefferson and Muskego. Cody McCarthy of Burlington shot the lone 25 in junior varsity.
As the weather gets warmer the scores will climb higher and the competition will get tighter each week.
The Mission of the SEWI SCTP Conference is to instill in young people a respect for good sportsmanship, competitiveness, cooperation, teamwork, and high moral character through trapshooting competition.
The SE Wisconsin SCTP Conference was formed to create in young people a set of personal values and character traits such as fair play, compassionate understanding, individual responsibility, self-discipline, and personal commitment - qualities necessary to become successful and contributing members of society. Competition is an important part of the Conference, but it is not the program’s underlying principle. The “win-at-all-costs” philosophy has no place in the Conference. Striving to win while playing by the rules does. It is the DUTY of everyone involved - coaches, parents and participants - to be role models for team members to emulate, by upholding high moral and ethical standards of personal conduct. Our Conference embraces and upholds all the rules, guidelines and standards of conduct; which are listed in the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation’s SCTP Handbook, Coaches Guidelines, and its Sportsmanship Contract. The safe responsible handling and use of firearms is the foundation of our organization. We believe that trapshooting is a lifetime sport that families can enjoy together and our Conference can bring communities together through interscholastic competition.
