This month in First Shots News we're going to tackle shotgun shooting. I remember the first time I was introduced to shotgun sports. It was at a Becoming an Outdoors Women program in southern Illinois. The ladies teaching us were excited to watch us shoot for the first time. They were so encouraging and enthusiastic that I ended up shooting with them and becoming a member of their organization. No, you will not break 25 clays in a row your first time out shooting clay targets, but you will have fun. Here are some pointers on getting started.

"Perhaps the most confusing five minutes a person can spend in their life is the first five minutes on a trap field," says Gil Ash of OSP Shooting School. In this video, aptly titled "How to Shoot Trap," Gil provides a great synopsis for those new to trapshooting. He explains how he approaches each station on a trap field. By knowing the proper hold points and focal points for each station, you can see great results from the start. Play Video

If you like to play golf, or even mini-golf, and you like to shoot skeet or trap, you're going to love sporting clays. Or if you want more of a challenge than shooting at airborne clay targets, you'll appreciate the change-up when a "rabbit" target zigzags across the field in front of you. Barbara Baird provides a look at sporting clays, commonly referred to as "golf with a shotgun."

Let's take a look at what makes a shotgun a shotgun. If you rely on Hollywood for your information, a shotgun can never miss and is capable of knocking a 1970 Pontiac GTO clear across Hazzard County. In reality, they're not quite like that, but a shotgun is one very versatile gun. Competition, recreation, hunting and home defense — a shotgun can do it all. Tom McHale provides a look at the types of shotguns and other things you should know.

Taz is not his name, though it might as well be. Luis Pineda Gloria is known more by the moniker of the Looney Tunes cartoon character than the name passed down through the men in his family — something the 19-year-old skeet shooter actually embraces. Lately, his shooting results as one of America's top skeet shooters means you won't forget his name, either. His foray into target shooting began, as it did for many youth, with a BB gun.

Thank you to all who entered the drawing last month and congratulations to Stephen S. the winner of theApril drawing.
