Introduce Someone to the Outdoors on NHF Day

JOIN THE NATIONWIDE CELEBRATION . . . NSSF is a proud sponsor of National Hunting and Fishing (NHF) Day, which will be celebrated this Saturday, Sept. 26, at events around the country. The longstanding celebration of traditional outdoor activities like hunting, target shooting and fishing not only provides opportunities for newcomers but also shines a light on the conservation contributions of sportsmen and women throughout the country. NHF Day's honorary co-chairs this year are the father-daughter duo Jim and Eva Shockey, two of hunting's most recognizable names. NSSF, which helped establish NHF Day in 1972, is part of a long list of sponsors. Learn more about NHF Day and events in your area.

Government Relations

  • NSSF RESPONDS TO ANTI-GUN GROUPS ON GRANT AWARD . . . Following last week's announcement that the U.S. Department of Justice had selected NSSF to receive a two-year, $2.4 million grant to provide firearm safety education messaging and free gun locks throughProject ChildSafe to communities throughout the country, two gun-control groups came forward to voice their opposition to the DOJ's decision. They then went on to make false claims about the quality of the Project ChildSafe program's cable-style gun locks. Read the NSSF Statement.
  • CALIFORNIANS, URGE GOV. BROWN TO VETO AB 96 & SB 347 . . . The California Legislature has sent Gov. Jerry Brown two misguided bills. AB 96 would end the state exemption allowing possession with intent to sell, or sale, of ivory. SB 347 would add to the list of misdemeanor convictions that would prohibit someone from possessing a firearm for 10 years. Brown has until Oct. 11 but could act at any time on these bills. See the NSSF Legislative Action Alerts: AB 96 | SB 347.
  • FEDERAL AND STATE ROUNDUP . . . The Michigan Senate overwhelmingly approved NSSF-supported measures to exempt gun locks and other safety devices from the state's sales and use tax. Georgia-based Daniel Defense hosted staff serving five members of their state's U.S. Congressional delegation at the company's Black Creek facility. The issue of the constitutionality of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act is headed to the Missouri Supreme Court. NSSF expects to file a friend of the court brief.

Retailers/Ranges

  • CABELA'S REINFORCES 'DON'T LIE FOR THE OTHER GUY' COMMITMENT . . . Cabela's has taken its commitment to the industry's "Don't Lie for the Other Guy" program to help prevent illegal "straw" purchases a step further. Now, customers beginning the process of purchasing a firearm in all 60 stores will be shown a new counter card that explains in a clear and concise way just what a straw purchase is and answers questions about the subject. The card was developed by NSSF working with Cabela's.
  • 2015 NSSF RETAILER COMPLIANCE SEMINAR LINEUP ENDS THIS WEEK . . . Just one Retailer Compliance Seminar remains in the last 2015 lineup of important day-long educational summits NSSF hosts for firearms retailers across the country. • ATF Q&A . . . More great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. One question relates to the importer that should be entered into the A&D book when the foreign manufacturer and the importer have the same company name. Another question asks whether an employee who becomes prohibited from possessing firearms can continue to be employed by an FFL.

At the International Shooting Sport Federation Shotgun World Championship in Lonato, Italy, Hancock won his thirdWorld Championship gold medal and in doing so became only the third athlete to ever win three men's skeet world championship titles. The impressive victory also secured Hancock a nomination to his third Olympic Games, where he hopes to win a third Olympic gold medal.
