Target Shooting Participation Continues to Rise

According to NSSF-funded research conducted by Responsive Management, participation in target shooting continues to rise with 51.2 million Americans participating in some form of target shooting in 2014. The report, entitled "Sport Shooting Participation in the United States in 2014," is available to NSSF business members by logging in.

Research

  • UPDATED NSSF REPORT ON HUNTING . . . One of NSSF's most popular Industry Intelligence Reports, "A Profile of Today's Hunters," has been updated with the latest data on hunting license sales and excise tax information. Added to this year's edition is information from NSSF's Hunting License Sales Index, which provides data on hunting license sales in a more timely manner than other sources. NSSF business members can log in to to view this 18-page report.

Setting the Record Straight

NEWSPAPER GETS SCHOOLED ON BACKGROUND CHECKS . . . The Des Moines Register recently ventured into what so many editorial boards seem to feel is the uncontroverted reality that expanding background checks to cover private firearms transfers offers a public safety panacea. The NSSF's Larry Keane countered that argument in this letter to the editor and explained the FixNICS initiative. Let's give credit to the Des Moines Register for being willing to share criticism of their viewpoint with their readers.

Government Relations

  • NSSF PRESIDENT RENAMED TO FEDERAL HUNTING HERITAGE ADVISORY PANEL . . . NSSF President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Sanetti has been reappointed to the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council. The group of experts was established in 2010 to provide advice to several federal agencies on conservation endeavors that benefit wildlife resources and recreational hunting. It also encourages partnership among the public, sporting conservation organizations, the states, Native American tribes and the federal government.Read the USFWS press release.
  • LEGAL ROUNDUP . . . NSSF has filed a friend-of-the-court (amicus) brief in support of having the ongoing challenge of a Chicago suburb's ordinance outlawing possession of modern sporting rifles (MSRs) heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. NSSF also filed an amicus brief in the 5th Circuit federal Court of Appeals case where the Federal government is appealing a lower court ruling that struck down the interstate handgun sales ban as unconstitutional.
  • STATE ROUNDUP . . . Texas voters this Nov. 3 will decide on a constitutional amendment protecting the right to hunt, fish and harvest wildlife. A New Hampshire House subcommittee has given its approval to HB 500, which would repeal prohibitions on using suppressors (or silencers, as the law states) for hunting. The Michael Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action gun control group wants to place a referendum question on the Maine November 2016 ballot that would expand background checks to include many private firearms transfers.

Retailers/Ranges

  • DOUBLE-CHECK THOSE FIREARM BARCODES . . . It is common today for large FFLs (and even some smaller ones) to enter an entire shipment of 100 or more firearms received from a manufacturer or distributor into their Acquisition and Disposition (A&D) records using a barcode scanner that reads the barcode off the firearm box and transfers firearm description data into the A&D records. That process may take only a few minutes—but therein lies an occasionally hidden and often unnoticed problem. Read more.
  • LAST 2015 RETAILER SEMINARS SLATED IN OHIO AND PENNSYLVANIA THIS MONTH . . .Two NSSF Retailer Compliance Education Seminars are scheduled this month: Sept. 15 in Dayton, Ohio, and Sept. 22 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. All firearms retailers in these regions are encouraged toregister to attend.
  • ATF Q&A . . . More great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. One question asks how to note physical markings in A&D records for an old firearm that does not have a serial number. Another question asks how a licensee should respond to a police officer's request for an original 4473.
  • DID YOU KNOW? . . . NSSF members receive a special discount on services provided by a payment processing company dedicated to providing top-end service to the firearms industry. The products offered by our partner company can offer significant savings over more traditional credit processing enterprises. Learn more.

SHOT Show University

  • OTIS TECHNOLOGY NEWEST BRONZE SPONSOR OF 2016 SHOT SHOW UNIVERSITY . . . NSSF is pleased to announce that Otis Technology has agreed to sponsor the 2016 SHOT Show University at the Bronze support level. Founded in 1985, New York-based Otis Technology is a manufacturer of premium firearms cleaning supplies and accessories. Read more.
