Ammunition Background Checks Suspended in N.Y.
In a default victory for Empire State gun owners, background checks for ammunition purchases, a centerpiece in New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's 2013 SAFE Act, have been scrapped for now. An agreement announced late Friday signed by Republican Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan and Director of Operations Jim Malatras suspends this section of the SAFE Act. The document stipulates that no state money will be used to implement the database, which also means the ban on Internet sales of ammunition is discontinued. The New York State Police acknowledged that currently there is a "lack of technology" for supporting the database. Read a New York newspaperaccount of the politics.

 NSSF WILL FIGHT SEATTLE GUN, AMMO TAX PLAN . . .NSSF is working against a proposal from the Seattle City Council President to place a $25 tax on each firearm and 5 cents on every round of ammunition sold in the city in order to fund "gun violence prevention programs." The Council is expected to consider the ordinance this Wednesday. It will have no effect on decreasing gun violence. Email the Seattle City Council today at council@seattle.gov and urge them to oppose this proposal.
- FEDERAL AND STATE ROUNDUP . . . The U.S. House of Representatives last week defeated a misguided attempt to ban commerce in legally owned products containing ivory. Sunday hunting in North Carolina will become legal, although with restrictions, on Oct. 1, following the signing of the law by Gov. Pat McCrory. New Jersey is in line to become the 39th state to enact Families Afield legislation following the approval by the legislature and with the expected signing into law of the measure by Gov. Chris Christie.

- TRADE SHOW ATTITUDES . . . During the recent 2015 Exhibitor Academy in Las Vegas, Jefferson Davis—better known as the "Tradeshow Turnaround Artist"—gave an hour-long address that had the nearly 100 academy attendees furiously taking notes and competing for attention during the Q&A session. One of Davis' presention highlights was that of how exhibitors perceive their time at a trade show. Read more.

- LAUNCH DATE FOR NEW NICS POSTPONED . . . The FBI CJIS Division has decided to postpone the July 14, 2015, delivery of Phase 1 of the New NICS. The new delivery date should not occur during peak season because of the potential risk to FFLs, to the public, to state partners and to the NICS staff. The New NICS team is drafting a revised go-live schedule, though no updated launch date has been announced. As Bullet Points was being prepared, NICS was experiencing a service outage. - ATF Q&A . . . Many great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. The first question asks how an FFL should respond to a police officer's request for an original Form 4473. The second question asks if a juvenile (18 and under) can possess a handgun on the business premises of a licensee.

- LOCAL S.A.F.E. SUMMER CHAMPIONS . . . To promote firearm safety during the summer months through its Project ChildSafe S.A.F.E. Summer campaign, NSSF is recognizing "Local Champions," the most recent being Kevin McNair, owner of Tactical West, of Las Vegas, for his efforts to encourage safety through hunter education classes, concealed carry classes and helping Boy Scouts earn their firearm-related merit badges. "We're very grateful for the work of people like Kevin McNair," said NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti. "Their work is instrumental in helping reduce firearm accidents."

Project ChildSafe industry supporters and law enforcement partners can access a host of firearms safety education tools on the program's newly launchedSafety Resources page. Shooting Industry magazine, for example, uses the program logo on its table of contents page andprovided coverage of recent Project ChildSafe events.

 FIRST WOMEN-ONLY RIMFIRE CHALLENGE EVENT TO DEBUT IN MARYLAND . . . NSSF is pleased to announce that Sanner's Lake Sportsmen's Club in Lexington Park, Maryland, has agreed to be the first Rimfire Challenge partner range to host a women-only Rimfire Challenge match. Open to both youth shooters and adult women, the First Annual Southern Maryland Women's Rimfire Challenge Pistol and Rifle Match will be held August 15. Read more.
 RHODE USHERS IN TEAM USA AS PAN AM GAMES FLAG BEARER . . . Five-time shooting sports Olympian Kim Rhode ushered in Team USA as the flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Pan American Games in Toronto on Friday. - 'HIGH SCHOOLS EMBRACE SHOOTING AS HOT NEW SPORT' . . . The explosive growth of Minnesota's high school clay target program continues to attract national media attention, like this article from Bloomberg Business last week. In 2009, the state high school clay target championships drew 30 participants. This year, there were 5,134.
- OWAA AWARD WINNERS . . . At its recent conference in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Outdoor Writers Association of America announced the winners in its 2015 Excellence in Craft Contests. First through third place winners earned a portion of the $11,000 in cash prizes as well as plaques and certificates.
