NSSF Industry Summit

Katie Pavlich and Dana Loesch joined NSSF's Mike Bazinet for a lively discussion on addressing media bias and correcting inaccurate reporting.

CHARTING THE WAY FORWARD . . . Though participation in target shooting and hunting have made significant gains in the last five years, those attending the NSSF Industry Summit last week were encouraged by nationally known speakers not to accept this favorable status quo and to look for innovative ways to build on their success. Held June 9-11 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the Summit also provided a report to more than 210 industry leaders on “Models of Success”—innovative programs implemented by state wildlife agencies to create new opportunities to hunt and target shoot. Breakout sessions on diversity, social media attacks on hunters, marketing and firearm safety were part of the information-packed schedule. “NSSF's goal with the Industry Summit is to serve as a catalyst for research-based, innovative strategies and programs that will help ensure a positive future for the shooting sports," said Chris Dolnack, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.Read the press release. See Summit website.

This year's conference features a morning of round-table sessions with key ATF branches, Customs and Border Protection, Treasury's Tax and Trade Bureau, and Census Bureau's Automated Export System. SHOT Show

  • SHOT SHOW AT SANDS THROUGH 2020 . . .NSSF and Sands Expo and Convention Center have extended their agreement so that the SHOT Show will be presented at the Sands Expo through 2020. NSSF had previously announced, in February, that it was extending its stay at the venue through 2017. “We’re pleased with the multi-million dollar investment that the Sands Expo has made in order to meet SHOT Show’s needs,” said Chris Dolnack, NSSF Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “The 2014 SHOT Show was the highest rated by both attendees and exhibitors alike, and we want to continue to build on our success here in Las Vegas.” Read press release.

Government Relations

  • NSSF ISSUES STATEMENT ON STUDY INVOLVING TRADITIONAL AMMO, EAGLES . . . The National Shooting Sports Foundation has issued a statement in response to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's preview of a study regarding traditional ammunition and bald eagle mortality in the upper Midwest. That preview has led to news stories misleading the public into thinking the use of traditional ammunition containing lead components is having a population-level impact on bald eagles. NSSF points out: "No conclusive evidence exists that shows hunters and target shooters using traditional ammunition have caused a decline in the population of raptors. Rather, raptor populations, including the population of bald eagles, continue to steadily rise – a welcome and positive trend that coincides with the longstanding, widespread use of traditional ammunition by sportsmen across America." Read the NSSF Statement.

  • http://nssf.org/share/images/Capitol_150.jpgBIPARTISAN SPORTSMEN’S ACT CONTINUES TO WIN SENATE CO-SPONSORS . . . More than 40 U.S. Senators have signed on as co-sponsors of S.2363, the Bipartisan Sportsman's Act. NSSF continues to urge all hunters, target shooters and outdoor trade business owners to get on the phone to encourage more senators to co-sponsor S.2363, our industry's top legislative priority. The most significant package of legislation in a generation, S.2363, protects the use of traditional ammunition, allows more flexibility for federal funds to be used to build and maintain ranges on public lands and ensures access to federal lands for hunting, shooting and other outdoor activities. Call your senators at 202-224-3121 and ask them to co-sponsor the bill if they haven't already done so. Find the list of co-sponsors
and call today or as soon as possible.

  • NSSF-BACKED FIXNICS BILL PASSES R.I. HOUSE . . . The Rhode Island House of Representatives last week unanimously approved legislation advocated by NSSF intended to ensure appropriate mental health records are submitted to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The measure, approved 73 to 0, will protect the confidentiality of mental health records and allow an appeals process. The State Senate Judiciary Committee also approved legislation after amending it to match the language passed by the House and it now moves to the Senate floor. NSSF Director Government Relations, State Affairs Jake McGuigan testified in favor of the bill and worked with key legislators to help secure passage. Read a news account on bill passage.

Legal

  • U.S. SUPREME COURT RULES IN ABRAMSKI STRAW-PURCHASE CASE . . . A narrowly-divided U.S. Supreme Court ruled today
that the federal ban on "straw" purchases of guns can be enforced even if the ultimate buyer is legally allowed to own firearm. The justices ruled 5-4 that the law applied to a man who purchased a firearm on behalf of his uncle, using funds provided by the uncle, with the intention of giving the gun to his uncle who was not prohibited from owning firearms. The case began after Bruce James Abramski bought a handgun in Virginia, in 2009 on behalf of his uncle using his uncle's money and later transferred it to him in Pennsylvania through a firearms retailer after a background check of the uncle. Abramski, a former police officer, had assured the Virginia dealer he was the "actual buyer" of the weapon even though he was really acting on his uncle's behalf but buying the gun using a police discount available to him.

  • PLEASANT HILL, CALIF. CITY COUNCIL OVERRULES ZONING PANEL . . . The Pleasant Hill City Council last week approved amending a city zoning ordinance restricting where federally licensed firearms retailers can operate. In passing the zoning changes, the City Council overruled Pleasant Hill's Planning Commission, which voted against adopting any new zoning restrictions. Under the city's new firearms and zoning ordinances, FFLs must obtain a police permit to do business, new FFL's are prohibited from operating within certain distances of homes, schools, parks and some other businesses and both must comply with onerous performance standards. NSSF maintains that the city cannot right a wrong by first improperly passing its firearms ordinance containing the zoning restrictions without the Commission's full review and then ask the Commission to approve the changes based on false and incomplete information. NSSF will continue to pursue its lawsuit against the Pleasant Hill City Council to block enforcement of these unnecessary and burdensome ordinances that violate California and local law and will do nothing to make Pleasant Hill safer.

  • ORCHID ADVISORY: INSPECTOR GADGET VISITS YOUR FFL . . . Are you tired of hearing about the great “inspector” coming to look at your “gadgets?" Well, that’s par for the course if you are a firearm manufacturer, dealer and distributor. Operating in any regulated industry comes with a few extra burdens. So then, how do you run your Federal Firearms License (FFL) with a little less stress? Read Inspector GADGET Visits Your FFL

  • AVOID COSTLY MISTAKES WHEN MAKING CHANGES IN YOUR BUSINESS . . .From time to time, federal firearms licensees (FFLs) decide or need to make changes in their businesses. Either way, when it comes time for you to make certain changes in your business, the ATF needs to know about them; and failing to let them know of your plans can have disastrous results for your business. Read more in the post by Harry McCabe.

  • MORE QUESTIONS ANSWERED . . . This week we answer two more of the many questions received on NSSF's members-only ATF compliance hotline. One question concerns transferring firearms to a dealer out of state, and the other is about running a NICS check on a customer who special ordered a firearm. Take a moment to make sure you know the correct procedures and share them with your staff.
