NSSF Wins Two Telly Awards

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN — AGAIN! . . . For the second straight year NSSF has claimed the Silver People's Telly, the Telly Awards' highest honor, in the Online Video category. The award went to the infographic video "Gun Crimes Plummet Even as Gun Sales Rise." In the Business-to-Business category, the Telly judges awarded NSSF the Bronze Telly for the 2015 SHOT Show promotional video "SHOT Show – Too Good To Miss." The Telly Awards represent the best work of the most respected corporate video departments, advertising agencies, production companies, television stations and cable operators in the world. Setting the Record Straight

NSSF OPPOSES BILL TO ABOLISH ATF . . . The liberal Center for American Progress last week called for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to be abolished and its law enforcement and regulatory responsibilities turned over to the FBI. The report followed the introduction of legislation to accomplish these actions authored by U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.). As has been the case when this proposal had been advanced in prior years, NSSF is opposed to these actions. NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Larry Keane told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "ATF has regulated the firearms industry for decades. It would be very disruptive and costly to our industry to have to begin dealing with a new, unfamiliar regulatory agency."

Government Relations

  • SEN. CRAPO MOVES TO BLOCK 'OPERATION CHOKE POINT' . . . Last week in the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, Sen. Michael Crapo (R-Idaho) introduced an amendment to the Financial Regulatory Improvement Act to prohibit federal financial services regulators from implementing the Department of Justice-originated "Operation Choke Point." In his remarks, Crapo compared the administration's logic in launching Operation Choke Point to the strategy used in the 2002 Tom Cruise movie "Minority Report," as if it can be determined who might commit a crime (in this case fraud) ahead of any actual evidence of wrongdoing. In the real-world case, however, entire industries were targeted. The amendment passed the committee 13-9 with Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) joining the Republicans in voting in favor. NSSF has been working closely with Members of Congress to help end discrimination by financial services providers against law-abiding industry members simply because a business is related to firearms or ammunition. In offering the amendment, Sen. Crapo referenced NSSF's support for this legislative action.
  • LEGISLATIVE ROUNDUP . . . In Washington, D.C. last week, Congressmen questioned Justice officials on "Operation Choke Point," the House Appropriations Committee passed the FY 2016 CJS Appropriations Bill containing important measures for our industry, and a new bi-partisan sportsmen's package — the Sportsmen's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act (HR 2406) — was introduced in the House. In the states, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton signed into law a bill legalizing suppressors, while a similar bill in Vermont awaits the governor's signature. Read a complete roundup here.

Import/Export Conference

  • ANNUAL IMPORT/EXPORT CONFERENCE REGISTRATION OPENS . . . The annual NSSF-FAIR Trade Import/Export Conference will be held Aug. 4-5 in Washington, D.C. Due to very positive feedback, this year will once again feature roundtable sessions with ATF, including eForms and Compliance and Imports, National Firearms Act, Firearms Technology, and Firearms Industry Programs Branches, as well as with invited officials from the Commerce Department, BIS Munitions Control Licensing Division, State Department DDTC, Customs and Border Protection, Treasury's Tax and Trade Bureau, and Census Bureau's Automated Export System. The conference will also feature topics related to export control reform, presentations from ATF, an update on the Census Bureau's Automated Export System (AES) and State Department speakers. Register now for early-bird pricing.

Research

  • NEW NSSF SURVEY TRACKER AVAILABLE . . . The NSSF Survey Tracker is a monitoring service using an online panel of active hunters and target shooters. Sourced by Southwick Associates' online panel atHunterSurvey.com, each report features Market Snapshot—purchases made in the past two months—and Market Leaders—the top brands purchased in different retail categories. The April 2015 edition posts Market Leaders for the product groups cover scents and binoculars, as well as responses to consumer questions on hunting and shooting participation. NSSF members may view, in addition to this latest edition, historical survey trackers by logging on to nssf.org, clicking on "NSSF Industry Research" and then on "Survey Tracker."
  • NSSF PRESENTS RESEARCH AT IHEA-USA CONFERENCE . . .During last week's annual IHEA-USA conference in Des Moines, Iowa, NSSF Director of Industry Research & Analysis, Jim Curcuruto, presented data on past and present research projects conducted with assistance from IHEA-USA. Reports such as Understanding the Impact of Peer Influence on Youth Participation in Hunting and Target Shooting and Hunter Education Graduates' Proclivity to Purchase a License provide useful insights into the important youth segment. NSSF was proud to be a Big Horn Sponsor of this event and manned an exhibit table that featured many of NSSF's safety literature items, as well as Project Childsafe information. NSSF thanks the many hunter education instructors who have helped distribute more than a million NSSF safety brochures over the years. News of Note

  • ANTI-GUN GROUP CALLED OUT FOR FALSIFICATION . . . Gun control organizations are known to exaggerate, confuse, conflate and misrepresent the facts. So, it was good to see that the Politifact organization recently challenged an assertion of the Michael Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety, rating one of the group's public statements "mostly false." This finding came regarding commentary following the recent tragic shooting of a New York City police officer. But as NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Larry Keane discusses in a blog post, there's more involved. The media also overreached in covering this story while largely ignoring another story in which a police officer's life was saved.
  • DALLAS SAFARI CLUB NEW MEMBER OF UN's IUCN . . . The United Nations' International Union for the Conservation of Nature has formally approved the application of the Dallas Safari Club as a new member. DSC's admission follows a lengthy and rigorous application process and positions DSC within one of the world's most influential and respected conservation bodies.
  • LIBERAL GUN OWNER . . . In her Town Hall column, Katie Pavlich draws attention to Jenna Glasser's altered perspective on gun ownership detailed in "I'm a Lefty with a Gun." Glasser's transformation took place after she purchased a gun for home protection and also found out that target shooting was fun.
  • NSSF IN THE NEWS . . . The Washington Times, Charleston Gazette, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Association Conventions & Facilities magazine and many other news outlets across the country included NSSF in their coverage last week. Popular topics included firearms industry economic growth, Project ChildSafe, UPS and suppressor shipment and more. View a full wrap-up of NSSF in the News.
