  • ONE MORE TIME, MRS. CLINTON, THE GUN INDUSTRY IS NOT 'IMMUNE FROM LIABILITY' . . . In aDemocratic presidential primary debate in Michigan Sunday night, Hillary Clinton again falsely charged that the firearms industry is immune from liability due to the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) and that the law should be repealed. To his credit, her challenger, Sen. Bernie Sanders, said he does not favor trying to drive firearms manufacturers out of business. Read an NSSF blog post from the fall on this topic. Legal scholar Victor E. Schwartz recently refuted this false narrative in the Wall Street Journal.
  • NSSF JOINS CALL FOR $1.3 BILLION ANNUAL CONSERVATION INVESTMENT . . . The Blue Ribbon Panel on Sustaining America's Diverse Fish & Wildlife Resources has released recommendations on how to address state wildlife conservation. The panel, including NSSF President Steve Sanetti, determined that $1.3 billion in revenue from energy and mineral development on federal lands should be used to fund state-based conservation efforts to proactively manage species, reducing taxpayer costs and regulatory red tape for species listed under the federal Endangered Species Act.
  • MINNESOTANS NEED TO ATTEND TRADITIONAL AMMO BAN HEARING . . . The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will hold a public hearing Thursday on the proposed rule to ban the use of lead shot on wildlife management areas in the farmland zone. Minnesota residents should attend this hearing to oppose this proposal. The hearing will be held 6 to 9 p.m. at the Department of Natural Resources headquarters cafeteria, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul. Read NSSF's fact sheet on traditional ammunition. The hearing will be held 6 to 9 p.m. this Thursday (March 10).
  • REGISTER FOR NSSF CONGRESSIONAL FLY-IN . . . The 2016 NSSF Congressional Fly-In will be held April 12-13. Every year, the Fly-In provides an outstanding opportunity for leaders from NSSF voting member companies and supporting distributor and manufacturing member companies, as well as leading retailers, to meet with members of Congress. Those eligible can register now.
  • STATE ROUNDUP . . . The Iowa Senate Judiciary Committee last week approvedHouse File 2279 to legalize the ownership and use of suppressors. The California Assembly Committee on Public Safety has approved three anti-gun bills. AB 1663and AB 1664 would expand California's current definition of "assault weapon" and ban the future sale of many modern sporting rifles. AB 1674 would prohibit the acquisition of more than one firearm per month. NSSF adamantly opposes each of these proposals and will continue to do so.

  • REGISTRATION IS OPEN . . . The third annual Firearms Industry Compliance Conference (FICC), May 2-4 in Atlanta, features three learning tracks and timely discussions of how the regulatory environment has evolved over the past two years. Pre-conference sessions will be held May 2 to provide FFLs concentrated discussions on firearms industry technology and federal firearm regulations. Legal

  • FULL COURT TO HEAR MARYLAND GUN LAW CHALLENGE . . . The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals hasgranted the petition to rehear oral argument in Kolbe v. Hogan. Last month, a three-judge court panel found the district court improperly applied intermediate scrutiny to the Maryland law prohibiting the possession of standard-capacity magazines and modern sporting rifles. NSSF and fellow plaintiffs filed an opposition to the State of Maryland's petition. Oral argument will be heard before the full court on May 11.
  • CHICAGO ANTI-GUN ACTIVISTS SUIT DISMISSED . . . Eight months after a coalition of activists filed suit against Chicago-area municipalities to force them to adopt ordinances to regulate firearms licensees, the lawsuit has been dismissed by a Cook County judge. Plaintiffs argued failure to adopt such rules violated the Civil Rights Act because violence disproportionately jeopardizes those living in Chicago's most impoverished neighborhoods. The judge found the coalition failed to provide a legal basis to link the regulation of firearms retailers to Chicago violence.

  • GUNS ARE NOT PATHOGENS . . . "The idea of addressing 'gun violence' as a public health problem persists among a number of scientists whom I think should know better: many of my fellow physicians led by some of our specialty organizations," writes Dr. Robert B. Young. "Guns are not pathogens—it is how they are used that matters. Epidemics are not characterized by gradual steady declines in morbidity and mortality, as homicides and violent crime have shown, accompanied by dramatic increases in gun ownership for 20 years."
  • STATE WILDLIFE AGENCIES TO RECEIVE $1.1 BILLION . . . The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will distribute $1.1 billion in revenues generated by the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act and Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration Act in support of conservation and outdoor recreation. The funding derives, in part, from excise taxes paid by the firearms and ammunition industry. "Our industry is proud that 10-11 percent of the cost of every new rifle, pistol and shotgun, and every round of ammunition sold, goes for these vital programs," said NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti. Read more.
  • USFWS RECOMMENDS DELISTING GRIZZLY BEARS . . . The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service last Friday proposed to remove the grizzly bear in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem from the Federal Lists of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife. The restoration of the grizzly bear in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho during the last three decades is one of America's great conservation successes. The Yellowstone population has rebounded from as few as 136 bears in 1975 to an estimated 700 or more today.
