Demand for NSSF Safety Education Materials Skyrockets in 2013

ORDERS TOP 3.6 MILLION . . . Demand for the National Shooting Sports Foundation's safety and education materials skyrocketed in 2013, with more than 3.6 million safety literature items and safety DVDs being ordered, an increase of 47 percent compared to 2012. Orders for NSSF's popular educational brochure "Firearms Safety Depends on You" reached 2 million in 2013, while orders for another popular NSSF brochure, "Firearms Responsibility in the Home," reached more than 1.3 million. NSSF provides a number of educational materials that help gun owners and non-owners make informed decisions when it comes to firearms safety. Learn more at nssf.org/safety.

  • EVOLVE CO-FOUNDER CRITICIZES INDUSTRY'S SAFETY EFFORTS . . . In an interview with Tom Gresham, host of Gun Talk Radio, Rebecca Bond, co-founder of Evolve, which some consider a "false flag" safety group, criticized the firearms industry for not doing enough about gun safety. "You're new on the scene and you're acting like nothing's been done," challenged Gresham. Bond seemed unaware that industry has provided 100 million gun locks to gun owners through Project ChildSafe and packaging with new firearms, that NSSF has provided free firearm safety videos to schools for years and that firearms-related crime and fatal accidents involving children have fallen steeply in the last two decades. In 2013 alone, NSSF fulfilled orders for 3.6 million safety literature and DVD items. Meanwhile, what has Evolve, with its Take on the Code website, done? Very little but call gun owners "Dumbasses" in its new video. Listen to the interview (begins around the 7:45 mark).

Industry News

  • CABELA'S CO-FOUNDER PASSES . . . The sporting world and outdoor industry mourned the passing of Richard (Dick) N. Cabela, co-founder and Chairman Emeritus of the giant outdoor retailer, Cabela's Inc., at age 77. He, along with his wife, Mary, and brother Jim founded Cabela's after offering hand-tied fishing flies through the mail. Since that time Cabela's has grown to be a $3.6 billion company with a worldwide catalog, Internet business and 50 stores in the United States and Canada.Read more about this industry icon.

  • GUNBROKER.COM DAYTONA DRIVERS RAISE MONEY FOR PROJECT CHILDSAFE . . . Daytona International Speedway NASCAR Camping World Truck Series winner John King signed with NTS Motorsports to race the #24 Chevy Silverado in last Friday's NextEra Energy Resources 250. With sponsorship fromGunBroker.com, Brennan Newberry returned to Daytona to defend his Keystone Light Pole Award from 2013 and race for his first NCWTS win. As they raced, bothGunBroker.com drivers raised $24 for every lap they ran in the top 10 during the race to benefit Project ChildSafe, the firearm-safety program sponsored by the NSSF.

  • CNN MONEY'S AARON SMITH AT THE 2014 SHOT SHOW . . . CNN Money reporter Aaron Smith spent two days at the SHOT Show and continues to post video to the CNN Money website, including a story on O.F. Mossberg & Sons'newly introduced line of Duck Dynasty themed firearms. He also has posted stories on some of the Chiappa Firearms product line featured at the 2014 SHOT Show and a fascinating interview with Ronnie Barrett, founder of Barrett Firearms Manufacturing.

Government Relations

  • http://nssf.org/share/images/Capitol_150.jpgSUPREME COURT DECLINES TO HEAR TWO CASES . . . The U.S Supreme Court today declined to review two cases involving the rights of 18 to 20 year olds to legally possess handguns. Gun-rights activists have been pressing the nation's highest court to accept the cases. Those advocates have cited various courts' resistance to expanding gun ownership rights following the Supreme Court's decision in 2008 in the Heller case that there is a Constitutional right to gun ownership for self-defense and in 2010 in the McDonald case that found the right applies to state and local gun-control efforts. NSSF had filed an amicus brief in one of the cases involving a Texas law that was upheld by U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit.

  • NSSF HAILS PASSAGE OF SUNDAY HUNTING IN VIRGINA . . . NSSF hailed the bipartisan work of the Virginia General Assembly following the State Senate's 28-to-11 vote last week to repeal the 19th Century Blue Law preventing Sunday hunting. The bill allowing hunting on private property on Sundays in the Commonwealth is now with Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who is expected to sign it into law. The legislation allows Sunday hunting on private land during designated hunting seasons by hunters who have the written permission of landowners. Read the NSSF press release.

  • VIOLENT CRIME CONTINUES TO DROP, FBI DATA SHOW . . . According to the FBI, murders fell by nearly 7 percent in the first half of 2013, compared with the same period in 2012. Aggravated assaults, meanwhile, fell by 6.6 percent, and robberies are down 1.8 percent. Overall, violent crime in the U.S. fell by 5.4 percent. Burglaries, larceny and auto thefts also decreased. The crime reductions, continuing a 30-year trend, correspond with a steady increase in firearm sales.Read more about the FBI report.

  • NSSF TO FILE BRIEF IN EXPECTED APPEAL OF SAN FRANCISCO MAGAZINE BAN RULING . . . A federal court last week denied efforts by law-abiding gun owners and retired police officers to temporarily stop enforcement of San Francisco's ordinance prohibiting individuals from possessing ammunition magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds, whether possessed before or after the ban was passed. Residents are now required to relinquish or remove such magazines from city and county limits by April 7 while the underlying lawsuit continues. The ruling not only conflicts with California state law that allows individuals to possess these magazines, but it also violates the constitutional right of armed self-defense established by the U.S. Supreme Court. NSSF plans to file an amicus brief in support of the parties' expected appeal.

  • N.J. DEMOCRATS CUT DEAL ON MAGAZINE CAPACITY . . . Democratic lawmakers in the New Jersey Legislature have reportedly struck a deal that would allow passage of a measure to restrict gun owners to 10-round ammunition magazines, down from the current limit of 15. Senate President Steve Sweeney, who has been supportive of gun owners' rights, seems to have caved to pressure from fellow Democrats in the state (and nationally) who want to apply more pressure to a politically weakened Gov. Chris Christie. NSSF will again battle this legislation, which was defeated last year in the Senate.

  • FixNICS BILL PASSES S.D. HOUSE . . .House Bill 1229, which will allow the State of South Dakota to submit mental-health records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), passed the state House of Representatives late last week by an overwhelming 53-17 vote. South Dakota is one of the priority target states in NSSF's nationwide FixNICS initiative. NSSF will continue to work for this legislation as it makes its way to the state Senate.

  • NSSF WILL TESTIFY TO REPEAL MARYLAND'S BALLISTICS IMAGING . . .Maryland is the only state left with a ballistics imaging law still on its books.  Testimony on Senate Bill 584 to repeal the law will be heard in the Judicial Proceedings Committee on Wednesday in Annapolis. The program was long ago defunded, but the law still requires that shell casings from all handguns sold in the state be submitted to the Maryland State Police. Repeal of this moribund law will save retailers considerable time and expense. NSSF will testify at the hearing.

  • NSSF 2014 CONGRESSIONAL FLY-IN APRIL 2-3 . . . The annual NSSF Congressional Fly-In will be held Wednesday and Thursday, April 2-3, 2014. Information on the Fly-In can be found here. Last year's event saw record numbers for attendance and coincided with the U.S. Senate's votes on what would have been several harmful gun-control proposals.

News of Note

  • MISS KANSAS DOWNS TROPHY WHITETAIL BUCK . . . Theresa Vail, Miss Kansas 2013, is an advocate for hunting, voicing pride in the sport, which began for her on outings with her dad. Though she has hunted in North America and Europe, what she lacked among her memories was tagging a trophy whitetail deer. That changed in her home state this past deer season when she arrowed a bruiser that green scored about 140. "I wanted a big Kansas buck," she said. "This was a thrill." Vail placed in the Top 10 in the 2013 Miss America Pageant and won the "America's Choice" award. She is currently a pre-dental senior at Kansas State University and a mechanic and section leader in the Kansas Army National Guard Medical Detachment. Read outdoor writer Brent Frazee's article in The Kansas City Star.

  • CNN TO PULL PLUG ON PIERS MORGAN SHOW . . . Anemic ratings, tirades against the Second Amendment, insults against gun owners and a proclivity for lecturing Americans on a variety of subjects were among the reasons that the Piers Morgan Live show will vanish from CNN's prime time evening lineup. "The only football he cares about is round and his lectures on guns were rife with contempt," said a New York Times article. Read more.

  • GALLERY MATCH IN CONNECTICUT . . . The Connecticut State Rifle & Revolver Association is sponsoring the 83rd Anniversary Gallery Match Program March 7-9 and 14-16 at the Blue Trail Range in Wallingford, Conn. Awards will be presented to all competitors in the Juniors and Sub-Juniors divisions. Such shooters may also enter the Senior matches, where awards will also be earned. The match is open to everyone, and awards are based on the Lewis Class system. This year the program is being held in memory of Anthony "Tony" Panko, a longtime Stratford, Conn., Police Athletic League coach. Questions on the event can be directed toopdac@snet.net.
