Give the Gift of Safety this Holiday Season

Safe storage is the number one way to help reduce firearms accidents and unauthorized access. Join the thousands of industry partners who support Project ChildSafe Foundation, a genuine firearms safety movement that has distributed over 37 million locks and safety kits during the last 15 years. Every day, law enforcement agencies across the country make requests for gun locks, but we can only fulfill a fraction of those requests with available funding. Your donation, which may be tax deductible, can help Project ChildSafe promote firearms safety education nationwide and help keep guns from falling into the wrong hands.

This time we're hearing from Gary Brenan, a contributing writer to International Hunter Education-USA Journal.
  • WEBINAR WEDNESDAY: CONTROLLING COSTS AND MEASURING SHOT SHOW EXHIBITING PERFORMANCE & ROI . . . Attend this webinar to go inside the tradeshow numbers game and learn the why, what and how to measure and report exhibiting performance and ROI. A must-attend event for every exhibitor wanting to measure and improve results. Setting the Record Straight

FIXNICS: WE KNOW WHO SCORED . . . The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) has seen a big increase in state-provided, adjudicated mental health records in its database three years after NSSF launched FixNICS to help close this gap. Everytown for Gun safety has again stepped forward to take credit for the success that has been hard won in state capitals by dint of the NSSF effort. We'd note that we didn't usually see Everytown representatives in the state capitols. They just show up later to take creditRead the Guns.com article.

Government Relations

  • HOUSE TURNS BACK ANTI-GUN EFFORT . . . Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) attempt to bring gun control legislation to the U.S. House of Representatives floor was blocked Thursday by Republicans. Pelosi sought to force a vote on allowing the federal government to use the error-ridden terrorist watch list to prohibit gun sales in the guise of fighting terrorism. The Senate previously defeated a similar measure. NSSF worked as a resource for Members of Congress during this process. The White House is said to be considering taking this action by executive order.
  • HALF OF AMERICANS OPPOSE 'ASSAULT WEAPON' BAN . . . New York Times poll shows that for the first time in the survey's history, a majority of Americans, 50 percent, oppose a ban on so-called "assault weapons." While it should not be a surprise to our industry to see survey results reflecting the reality that modern sporting rifles are increasingly popular nationwide, it is encouraging that even the New York Times poll finds that support for such a ban is down 19 percent since 2011.

Legal

  • NSSF, CO-PLAINTIFFS RESPOND TO SEATTLE'S MOTION IN TAX CASE . . . NSSF and co-plaintiffs in the Seattle firearms and ammunition tax case have filed a consolidated response to the city's cross motion for summary judgment and in support of our own motion for summary judgment. We argue that Seattle's Gun Violence ordinance is impermissible under Washington's constitution and seek an injunction to prevent irrevocable harm to our retail members should the ordinance be enforced beginning Jan. 1, 2016. There will be a hearing Friday.

Retailers/Ranges

  • NICS VOLUME AT RECORD LEVELS . . . FBI/NICS is reporting that background check transaction volume has been higher than forecast, causing most of the FFL liaison staff members to be assigned to support operations for their entire shifts, which is unprecedented. The current volume is now expected to continue through December, which provides another good reason for FFLs to use the ECheck system . FFLs calling NICS with questions or on other routine business should expect delays.

  • ATF Q&A . . . More great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. One question asks what importer should be entered into the A&D book when the foreign manufacturer and the importer have the same company name. Another question asks if a United States-issued passport is a valid form of identification for a firearms purchaser to provide to an FFL when attempting to purchase a firearm.
  • DID YOU KNOW? . . . NSSF has partnered with a U.S company to provide our members with a discount on safety markers that demonstrate a firearm's chamber is unloaded.Learn more.
