NSSF's Steve Sanetti Talks About
'Smart Guns' on 60 Minutes

The CBS news magazine program 60 Minutes Sunday night aired a segment on "Smart Guns" during which NSSF President Steve Sanetti answered questions from reporter Lesley Stahl and explained that the industry does not oppose the development of authorized user technology for firearms but that caution is warranted. Read more.

Setting the Record Straight

NRA, NSSF NOT IN COMPETITION . . . When editorial writers and pundits with anti-gun viewpoints seek to place blame for the failure of their side to enact more restrictions on firearms owners, it's usually the National Rifle Association that draws their ire. When the Baltimore Sun recently took a different stab at the issue, deciding NSSF and other organizations are actually in competition with the NRA, NSSF's Larry Keane took the opportunity to set the record straight in this letter to the editor

Government Relations

  • MCCAIN BLASTS ARMY'S NEW HANDGUN SELECTION PROCESS . . . U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) last week issued a report highly critical of the Army's process used to replace the military's standard-issue Beretta M9 sidearm. Without overhauling the Army's request for proposal, "the risk is too high that the Army will waste even more time and money in getting a sorely needed new handgun fielded to our soldiers," McCain said. Read the Army Times coverage.
  • SENS. CORNYN, AYOTTE CALL FOR FINISHING EXPORT CONTROL REFORM . . . U.S. Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas), Chairman of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on International Trade, Customs and Global Competitiveness, as well as the Republican Majority Whip, and Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), of the Armed Services Committee, have joined the growing number of Members of Congress calling for the Obama administration to complete implementation of its Export Control Reform (ECR) initiative. A complicated and duplicative system still burdens the firearms and ammunition industry.
  • LEGAL ROUNDUP . . . NSSF, the NRA, Second Amendment Foundation and several individual plaintiffs have filed their opening brief in the lawsuit challenging the City of Seattle's firearm and ammunition tax. Plaintiffs in the Ninth Circuit Court case of Peña v. Lindley, challenging California's Unsafe Handgun rostering scheme as unconstitutional, have filed their reply brief with the court. Appellants rebut the state's view that it may ban all but one handgun before the Second Amendment is implicated.

  • ATF Q&A . . . More great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. One question asks if a licensee can return a consigned firearm to a different individual other than the person who originally placed the firearm on consignment. Another question asks what a customer must do if he or she mistakenly answers "No" on Question No. 12 on Form 4473 when the question does not apply to him or her.

  • IS COMPLIANCE A STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE? . . . Our industry is in the best position when FFLs collaborate on firearm compliance learning opportunities, new technology and lessons learned. Unfortunately, we find those who have yet to modernize their firearm compliance programs spending more time and money, reactively, to address open issues.
