Vol. 16 No. 42

The FBI Stats are in: Crime in the U.S.
Fell Again in 2014

GUN SALES UP, CRIME DOWN . . . You're really not to blame if you haven't heard that violent crime declined again in 2014. After all, the news media generally do not report on the release of these annual statistics from the country's leading federal crime fighting agency. As NSSF President Steve Sanetti explains in this NSSF blog post, violent crime has continued its long-term decline even as a record-breaking number of firearms have been purchased by the law-abiding American population.

Setting the Record Straight

THE BEST FIX IS TO FIXNICS . . . A Washington Post editorial last week cited the renewed political push for more gun control, whether by law or executive action, in the wake of the Oregon community college tragedy and called for expansion of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) to cover more private firearms transfers. NSSF's Larry Keane points out in this letter to the editor that ensuring all appropriate record are in NICS is the best route to enhancing public safety.

Government Relations

  • DEMOCRATS TALK GUN CONTROL IN THEIR FIRST DEBATE . . . The first Democratic presidential debate last week on CNN saw Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O'Malley and Lincoln Chafee eagerly competing to see who could deliver more anti-gun talking points to pander to the generally liberal primary election voters. Only Jim Webb, who barely registers in national polls, expressed an appreciation for Americans' legitimate concern regarding the exercise of their Second Amendment right to self-defense. View gun comments highlights of the debate here.
  • LEGAL AND STATE ROUNDUP . . . Two Milwaukee police officers have been awarded more than $5 million after a jury found a retailer liable for injuries they sustained from a straw-purchased firearm. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will seek comments on a proposed rule change to ban the use of lead shot in certain wildlife management areas. California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom has unveiled a 2016 ballot initiative limiting magazine capacity to 10 rounds and requiring background checks for all ammunition purchases.
