A Record-Setting SHOT Show

January 20, 2014

Vol. 15 No. 2

A Record-Setting SHOT Show

ATTENDANCE SOARS . . . The 36th SHOT Show, held Jan. 14-17 at the Sands Expo & Convention Center in Las Vegas, was bigger and, based on early feedback, better than all previous shows. Total attendance was an all-time high of 67,000 industry professionals, an increase of 5,000 over last year. “I think that really speaks to the quality of the event and the enthusiasm and passion of our industry to provide quality products for hunting, target shooting and personal and home defense,” said Chris Dolnack, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for NSSF, which owns and manages the show. This upbeat SHOT Show, the first under new management company ConvExx, gives the industry good reason to believe that 2014 will be another strong year for sales of firearms, ammunition, outdoor gear and law enforcement equipment. Revenues from the SHOT Show support NSSF’s mission to promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports. See the Las Vegas Review-Journal article and local affiliate TV coverage.

  • NSSF REPORT: TARGET SHOOTING ADDS BILLIONS TO ECONOMY . . . At a press conference during SHOT Show, NSSF issued a report called “Target Shooting in America: Millions of Shooters, Billions of Dollars,” revealing that the money target shooters spent in 2011 resulted in $23 billion being added to the nation’s economy and supported more than 185,000 jobs. Combined data from “Target Shooting in America” and last year’s “Hunting in America” report shows that spending by target shooters and hunters had a total impact of more than $110 billion on the nation’s economy in 2011, supporting more than 866,000 jobs. • PROJECT CHILDSAFE COMES TO LAS VEGAS . . . A few days before SHOT Show began, the firearms industry’s national gun safety program, Project ChildSafe, participated in a press conference with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department and Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly to remind area gun owners about their responsibility to securely store firearms when not in use. With reporters from three television stations and two newspapers in attendance, NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti said, “Securely storing firearms is the No. 1 way to help prevent firearms accidents, theft and misuse.” In a statement, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, in part, “Accidental shootings are preventable. I am glad that NSSF has been a leader in providing common-sense information to parents, educational materials to children, and free gun locks to families.” SHOT Show participants were able to learn more about Project ChildSafe at the program’s booth, in the NSSF Member Lounge and at SHOT Show Media Day at the Range.

  • GOLF FUNDRAISER HELPS VETERANS’ FAMILIES . . . For the third time, NSSF hosted a charity golf event at the SHOT Show in partnership with the PGA Tour for Birdies for the Brave. The event at TPC Summerlin raised more than $100,000 for military homefront groups. Birdies for the Brave was founded by PGA Tour pro Phil Mickelson and his wife, Amy.Read more.

  • ‘RADIO ROW’ BRINGS SHOT SHOW TO HUGE AUDIENCE . . . Some of the country’s most well-known radio personalities, including Mike Gallagher and Lars Larson, broadcasted live from SHOT Show’s new “Radio Row.” Their guests included Texas Gov. Radio Row brought the excitement of SHOT Show to millions of listeners.

Government Relations

  • TEXAS GOV. RICK PERRY IS A STAR AT THE SHOT SHOW . . . Texas Gov. Rick Perry, an avid sports shooter and outdoorsman, came to the SHOT Show with a small delegation of state officials both to talk to companies already based in the Lone Star State and as part of his ongoing economic development initiative to recruit firearms and component manufacturers to move there. Dressed for the floor in a tactical look favored by many attendees, it did not take long for him to be recognized. The governor seemed more than pleased to stop and take pictures with attendees and to sign autographs. He also granted interviews to the Fox News Channel on the show floor and radio host Lars Larsen on Radio Row.

  • NSSF-SUPPORTED CONCEALED CARRY BILL INTRODUCED . . . U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) recently introduced the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2014. This NSSF-supported bill will create a nationwide reciprocity program for concealed carry permit holders to enable them to travel to other states and legally carry a concealed firearm. Now that every state in the union allows for some level of concealed carry, one of the major obstacles preventing passage of this bill has been cleared.

  • ATF RELEASES FAVORABLE INSPECTION RESULTS REPORT AT SHOT SHOW . . . At the 2014 NSSF SHOT Show, the ATF released a new report demonstrating the success of federal firearms licensees in complying with federal laws and regulations. ATF reported that during Fiscal Year 2013, the agency conducted compliance inspections of 10,002 licensees, and the results show that the licensees are overwhelmingly complying with myriad laws and regulations. Less than one percent, 0.69 percent, of the inspections resulted in a license revocation or a denied renewal. Roughly half of those inspected, 48.73 percent, were found to have no violations, slightly higher than FY 2012 and generally consistent with historical patterns showing a culture of compliance. As an industry, we are proud of our commitment to compliance and welcome the positive inspections results report.

  • NSSF MEETS WITH ATF ON IMPORTANT INDUSTRY ISSUES . . . NSSF met with ATF at the SHOT Show to discuss several regulatory issues, including the recently published ATF Rule 2013-5 on electronic firearms acquisition and disposition record keeping that supersedes all prior rulings on e-record keeping.See this NSSF Advisory on this meeting.

  • COURT HEARS ARGUMENTS IN NSSF SUIT CHALLENGING SUNNYVALE, CALIF., REPORTING RULES . . . In December, NSSF and two local FFLs filed two separate lawsuits challenging on state preemption grounds certain firearms and ammunition reporting requirements and gun dealer zoning restrictions recently passed in Sunnyvale and Pleasant Hill, Calif. Last week, the Santa Clara Superior Court heard oral arguments on NSSF’s request to enjoin Sunnyvale from enforcing its ordinance. A decision by the court is expected shortly. In the Pleasant Hill lawsuit, the city has until Jan. 22 to respond to NSSF’s complaint.

  • NSSF, SAAMI LAWSUIT SERVED ON CALIF. ATTORNEY GENERAL . . . NSSF and SAAMI’s lawsuit seeking to invalidate and stop enforcement of California’s firearms microstamping law was served on the state and Attorney General Kamala Harris on Jan. 15. The firearms Industry has long held that there is no existing microstamping technology that will reliably, consistently and legibly imprint the required identifying information by a semiautomatic handgun on the ammunition it fires. Manufacturers cannot comply with a law that is a back-door attempt to prevent the sale of new semiautomatic handguns to law-abiding citizens in California and will not contribute to improving public safety.

  • NSSF RESPONDS TO CALIFORNIA NEWSPAPER OP-ED ON TRADITIONAL LEAD AMMO . . . NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Larry Keane last week responded to an op-ed essay in the Santa Cruz Sentinel in which the author claimed research on condors lent support to California's new ban on traditional lead ammunition. The opinion piece ignored scientific data that points to alternate conclusions. Wrote Keane, "Absent sound scientific evidence demonstrating a (condor) population impact caused by the use of traditional ammunition, there was no justification for restricting or banning its use." Read the full response.
