Statement by Kurt Thiede, Division Administrator Lands on the Release of Dr. Kroll’s Report
We’re ready and willing to roll up our sleeves and review the work of Dr. Kroll and his team, and develop a game plan to address his findings. We haven’t had a chance yet to analyze the recommendations – we are looking forward to delving into them.
We want the same thing that Dr. Kroll and his team wants – which is to have the best managed deer herd in the country. The report identifies some of the same key issues that we have identified and have been working on. We look forward to reviewing their findings and recommendations on solutions that will help tackle these challenges.
We understand that outside reviews often contain recommendations for improvement; we see this as an opportunity. We are not afraid to face recommendations and critiques that are contained in the report and adjust accordingly. We believe that Dr. Kroll and his team have the best interests of deer hunting in Wisconsin guiding their report. We are privileged to have three of the top deer experts in the country review our deer management program.
Wisconsin is known as a destination for great deer hunting which is a testament to the commitment and professionalism of our deer managers. We look forward to working with Dr. Kroll and his team to make Wisconsin deer hunting even better. Our commitment is to make Wisconsin the leader in deer management.
One of Dr. Kroll’s key messages has been to better involve the public in deer management decisions; we firmly believe in that as well. Therefore, a key component of any implementation plan will be incorporating our hunters, stakeholders and the tribes into the decision making process.
