Stan Baker joins Mule Deer Foundation as Habitat Stewardship Coordinator

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Stan Baker recently joined the Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) as Habitat Stewardship Coordinator. In this position, Baker will work with federal land management agencies to restore forest and range habitat for the benefit of mule deer and other wildlife.
Baker has a strong background in natural resource management. He was a regional biologist for the National Wild Turkey Federation, and he has extensive work experience with the Utah Dept. of Natural Resources, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service. Baker also brings experience from the private sector, where he worked for a time as a Forester.
As MDF’s Habitat Stewardship Coordinator, one of Baker’s first undertakings will be forest stewardship projects on the Dixie, Fishlake and Manti-La Sal National Forests, thinning and harvesting timber to reduce hazardous fuels and promote aspen regeneration. Baker plans to facilitate another new project this summer on the Dixie National Forest.
MDF President and CEO Miles Moretti said, “Right out of the gate, Stan will focus his efforts in Utah and Western Colorado, but we plan to expand our Habitat Stewardship Program into other states, as well.”
Baker said, “Through MDF’s Habitat Stewardship Program, we will form agreements with land management agencies, and sometimes private sector participants, to administer large scale habitat projects. We’ll act as an intermediary between the agencies and contractors in order to accomplish work on the ground.”
He continued, “I grew up in Utah during the ‘glory days’ of mule deer hunting. I want to be a part of restoring mule deer habitat so others have future opportunities to hunt this iconic species of the West.”
Stan and his wife Chris reside in Moab, Utah. They have two adult sons living in Salt Lake City and a daughter attending college. Baker received his B.S. degree in Range Science from Utah State University.
