Warden Wire: FAQs: Hunter education, antlerless hunt and tree stands

By: Bureau of Law Enforcement

Frequently Asked Questions

October 11, 2012

Here are answers to some of the recent most frequently asked law enforcement questions taken this week by the DNR Call Center.

The Call Center is staffed daily, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m., and offers bilingual service in Spanish and Hmong. The number is 1-888-936-7463.

Question 1: If I can’t find a hunter education class before deer season, can I still hunt?

Answer: Yes. If you need hunter education and cannot find a class, you have the option of hunting under the DNR mentor program. Here is the information on the rules and regulations: http://dnr.wi.gov/education/outdoorskills/mentor.html

Question 2: Is there going to be a 4-day antlerless hunt this weekend in the CWD units?

Answer: The 4-day antlerless gun hunt October 11 – 15 has been suspended by the governor. Archery season still will continue as usual.

Question 3: Is it legal to put up a tree stand on private land open for hunting in the Managed Forest Law or Voluntary Public Access programs?

Answer: Just as it is with state land, it is legal to put up a tree stand for use during the hunting hours as long as no damage is done to the tree -- such as cutting limbs. All tree stands and ground blinds must be removed completely from the property at the close of hunting hours each day, and all other personal property must be removed by 11 p.m. each day -- unless you have specific permission from the property owner to do otherwise.
