Washburn County Fishing & Outdoor Report

11/20/17 - Reported by Washburn County Tourism

“Wisconsin's nine-day gun deer season opened this past Saturday.  While the rut is starting to wind down, in some areas it is still going strong. There is still frequent deer movement and sightings of scrapes and rubs still reported. The overall archery deer harvest is running higher than 2016. The extremely mild winter in 2016-17 will yield similar results this coming fall for antler development and fawn recruitment,” as reported by the Wisconsin DNR.

The Spooner Advocate created a Buck Fever report with information from Mike Zachmeister of the Wisconsin DNR Northern Region. The report stated that “ many deer that made it through this year will be 4.5 years old in the 2017 hunting season. For the upcoming season, we should see strong 2 ½ nd 3 ½ age classes of buck. They will have respectable antler development due to the mild winter.”

Hunters who made it out for opening weekend experienced some crisp cool mornings, and breezy evening hunts.  Some local hunters reported quite a few bucks still chasing does. We saw photos from successful hunters. Share your hunt with us by using #Washburn County and #HuntWashburnCounty . If you want to share your hunting story with us please send it to info@washburncounty.org, your photo could make it onto our report!

As for fishing, we are kind of in between the ice fishing and the open water fishing seasons right now here in Washburn County, says Jim Stroede of Jim Stroede Fishing Guide Service. We've had enough ice for a few brave souls to do a little ice fishing, but we've also had a few warmer days that melted the ice we had. Be safe until it gets colder.
