Sonny’s ‘Buck’ Haus
Eighty eight year old, Sonny Backhaus from Palmyra, WI prepares for the 2015 deer hunt in his newly constructed deer stand. Backhaus has been hunting the North woods of Bayfield County, WI for 53 years. In 1962, he began hunting the Chequamegon National forest using a tent for shelter. Three years later, he and nine hunting buddies bought 40 acres in the township of Barnes, naming it the “Crazy 10”. The deer camp with cabin is still being used yearly after 50 years. Although the deer herd is down in numbers, Sonny still enjoys the chance to get his “trophy’ and wouldn’t miss the comradery with friends and hunters in the North woods.
