Learn How To Process Deer At Hands-On Deer Butchering Workshops

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting several workshops to teach new and experienced hunters how to process a deer.

These inclusive workshops will be led by professionals or experienced home processors and will show participants how to break down a deer step-by-step. Experts will also share tips on hanging a deer at home, show how to remove lymph nodes for CWD testing, and explain the best practices to store your venison by canning or freezing.

Workshops will take approximately 3 to 4 hours. Participants should come prepared to help skin, quarter, cut, trim and package. All supplies will be provided, and you'll go home with venison.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE:

  • Green Bay Service Center: Green Bay – Sept. 25
  • Sandhill Wildlife Area: Babcock – Oct. 1 (deer processing) and Oct. 2 (canning)
  • Havenwoods State Forest: Milwaukee – Oct. 13

For more information, visit the Learn to Hunt webpage of the DNR website. Scroll down to the "Upcoming Learn to Hunt Events" section to view the calendar and instructions on how to sign up for a workshop. Workshops will be posted throughout the season as they are scheduled.

More tutorials are available on the Wisconsin DNR's Youtube page, including a deer processing guide. Click here for Part 1 or Part 2.
