New direction needed at DNR Dick Ellis Candidate for governor Tim Michels indicated in October that if elected he would break up the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to serve 1) business and 2 ) the hunting and fishing, or sporting community. “It’s not my opinion that the DNR is broken,” Michels said. “It’s what I hear everywhere I go.” Better days. Hunter’s Beware

Hunters beware. Weather in the Lake Superior Country of Northern Bayfield County could have and likely will have a huge impact on deer and a hunters’ success.  The recent snow storm dumped many inches in the Northland.  Snow has settled some but Lake effect snow doesn't seem to want to let up in the higher elevation areas.  If you are going to hunt these higher elevation areas you’re going to need a good 4x4 truck and pack a shovel.  You might need that too. Car or trucks with two wheel drive won’t cut it. Even ATVs will struggle.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

I have found the closer you get to the South Shore area bordering Lake Superior (Cornucopia area) the less snow (8-10 inches), but drive only a short distance and you have 15-20 inches.  It seems the Washburn and Bayfield side has the most.  I believe the deer will eventually bail out of these deep snowy areas and head for better ground.  There are pockets of deer but trying to locate them will be challenging.

After reviewing my Cuddeback Trail Cameras this past Tuesday I have huge concerns concerning our upcoming prospects, fawns.   Looking at 359 pictures and videos from last night I was awe struck by the fact that there was not one fawn from this year in a single picture and even more concerned that very few were captured on trail camera this fall.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

I scratch my head wondering what's happened and happening.  This past winter 2014 took its toll, and I believe the fawns that were born only made it for a short time this spring and summer due to our over- abundance of predators.  Back when winters were severe it took a few years for the deer herd to recover but now add an unbalanced, over- population of predators in the mix and it could take years to get a decent whitetail herd back if at all.

Have a safe hunt.
