DNR appoints Bob Nack as state's first DMAP leader

MADISON – Bob Nack has been appointed as the Department of Natural Resources’ Deer Management Assistance Program and Big Game Section Chief.

Nack, 36, of Fall River, begins fulltime in his new position on Oct. 28. Until then, he is serving in his current role as supervisor of the DNR State Game Farm in Poynette during the fall to assure continuity of operations during the peak of pheasant stocking.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have Bob as our DMAP and Big Game Section Leader,” says Tom Hauge, director of the DNR’s wildlife management program. “Bob is an avid outdoorsman and he understands and respects the passion Wisconsin has for our forests and big game populations.”

Nack will focus on developing and delivering the DMAP program to Wisconsin landowners. Initiating DMAP in Wisconsin is a central recommendation of the Deer Trustee Report and is intended to improving relationships between hunters, landowners, and DNR.

The program is under development and is expected to begin in 2014. It will include site specific management of deer, wildlife, and habitat, as well as the collection of biological data for management decisions.

“Over the past decade of my wildlife conservation career, my most enjoyable work has been working with landowners, listening to their desires to improve their land for wildlife, and helping them achieve their goals,” said Nack. “DMAP has great potential for Wisconsin and I’m excited to start building partnerships with landowners and conservation organizations to achieve that potential.”

Nack managed the State Game Farm for the past seven years and supervised the wildlife program in Columbia County for the past three years. Prior to working for DNR, Nack was a wildlife specialist with the USDA/Wildlife Services program in Waupun. Nack received a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife and Biology from UW-Stevens Point, and Master’s Degree in Wildlife Conservation from the University of Minnesota.

Originally from Howards Grove, WI, Bob currently lives in Fall River with his wife and two daughters.

“My entire family enjoys the outdoors, and we especially enjoy hunting with our two dogs.” Bob especially enjoys escaping to northern Wisconsin during the fall hunting seasons and has hunted out of a traditional deer camp near Phillips since he was twelve.

“I value the natural resources and rich hunting traditions in the state and look forward to working with the hunting community, landowners, and interested stakeholders,” says Nack.
