Diary of a Wisconsin Bear Guide 11-6-2012

By Mike Foss

The Rut Begins

Trail cam activity is picking up.  While venturing down dirt fire roads out in the Chequamegon National Forest the deer trails crossing the roads are more defined with tracks all over.  Strong evidence that the rut and chasing has begun.

deer hunting wisconsin

A nice buck I am hunting shows himself early on a scrape line. The only one thing missing is me on stand to greet him.

Visited one of my old haunts this past week and the owner just happened to be at his cabin. I asked if I could have permission to late season deer hunt his property and he was kind enough to say yes.

I noticed he recently had part of his property logged off.  While scouting in there I found some hollow trees that were discarded by the logger. It’s never too early to think about bear hunting so I cut those hollow trees into 3 foot sections, loaded them in my truck. They will make for great bear bait stations.

I have two archery deer hunters coming up North to our Bayfield County camp.  One will arrive this coming week and the other four days before the rifle deer season opener.  Hopefully I will have some success photos to share with you.

Until next time, Good Hunting.
