Diary of a Wisconsin Bear Guide 8-14-2012
By Mike Foss
Good news. My brother David is back home recovering from his injuries. He will take months to get back on his feet but he is doing well. Thank you for all the prayers.
This little yearling is trying to figure out how to get at the goodies.
Bear baits are very active with more and more pronounced trails leading to and from the stations. I will be adding an extra day of baiting this week which will continue until the season begins.
One of my helpers called the other day with concerns. It seems one bait station never has any bait left in it but the logs are not moved. Sounds fishy to me. I suspect it’s an animal but there are no signs of digging. It could be another hunter up to no good and looking for some free goodies. I will put up a Cuddeback trail camera to solve the mystery.
The excitement is setting in, as it does every year, for me and our hunters. More and more calls from my bear clients with questions are rolling in. I can also feel the urgency for the season to begin. There has already been a lot of hard work, with much more on the horizon. How will this season end?
My last shipment of Bear Scents came in this past week. Not that I need it but I want to play it safe so I don't run out. I have 15 more barrels of bear bait being delivered this Saturday but…it never hurts to have extra bait.
